Назва книги — це слова з вірша, які його батько, відомий поет Ай Цінь, написав під час відвідування руїн стародавнього міста на Шовковому шляху: 'Із тисячі років радощів і смутку / Не лишилося жодного сліду'. Перебуваючи в ув’язненні, Ай вирішив, що таки хоче залишити слід; жаль через нездоланність прірви між ним і його вже покійним батьком, а також страх, що його маленький син може ніколи не дізнатися, хто такий насправді його батько, спонукали Ая Вейвея написати цю книгу. — Джіянґ Фан для The New Yorker.

Ідея написати цю книжку прийшла до мене 2011 року, коли мене арештувала поліція. У період вимушеної ізоляції я відчув потребу осмислити свої стосунки з батьком, Ай Ціном. Ми з ним не були емоційно близькі, проте наш зв’язок, безсумнівно, вплинув на те, який шлях у житті я обрав і в якому становищі опинився. Деякі особисті проблеми й політичні труднощі, які я пережив, були ті самі, з якими зіткнувся мій батько. Мене, як і його, таврували ворогом держави. Отож я вирішив написати розповідь про своє й батькове життя та поділитися цими мемуарами зі своїм сином, Ай Лао, якому на час мого арешту якраз виповнилося два роки.
