The Namiki Emperor Maki-e Fountain Pen - Goldfish pairs the brand's largest writing instrument with a tranquil, luminous water motif. In the expansive Emperor format, the movement of goldfish and ripples is rendered with striking depth, inviting the eye to linger before the pen ever meets paper. It is a work that rewards close study and repeated use, revealing the layered character of urushi lacquer and hand-applied maki-e under changing light.

Craftsmanship & Design

At the heart of this Emperor lies an ebonite core enveloped in natural urushi, built up in multiple coats and hand-polished to a deep, mirror-like sheen. Over this lacquered canvas, Namiki artisans apply maki-e using precious metallic powders and pigments to articulate the Goldfish design with dimension and clarity. Subtle transitions of tone and the interplay between matte and gloss suggest water, motion, and the shimmer of scales, while the generous barrel provides the ideal scale for such painterly detail.

The Emperor silhouette is deliberately substantial, its flowing profile uninterrupted and serene in hand. Threading is precise and smooth for a confident cap closure, and the surface finish reflects the time-intensive process that has defined Namiki's atelier work for generations. Every element serves the artwork and the act of writing in equal measure.

Writing Experience

The No. 50 18k gold nib is a hallmark of the Emperor series. Hand-polished and finely tuned, it offers a broad, stable sweet spot with a gentle, resilient give that glides across the page. An oversized ebonite feed delivers consistent flow for long sessions, preserving line integrity with a quiet, unforced smoothness characteristic of Namiki and Pilot's highest-grade nib tuning.

Filling is via a traditional Japanese eyedropper mechanism with a shut-off valve in the barrel. For storage and transport, close the valve to isolate the ink. For writing, a slight turn opens the channel, allowing the ample ink supply to feed the nib with calm reliability. The result is a serene, unhurried script that suits everything from daily journaling to carefully rendered correspondence.

Heritage

Namiki, the artisanal arm of Pilot, has pursued urushi and maki-e on writing instruments since the 1920s, uniting time-honored lacquer craft with precision nibmaking. The Emperor format represents the apex of that philosophy: a large canvas for traditional Japanese decorative arts coupled with a flagship 18k nib and meticulous engineering. The Goldfish theme, with its quiet sense of movement and clarity, underscores the house's ability to translate living subjects into enduring lacquer work.

A timeless guide to spiritual perfection
Format: Kindle
A classic book on spiritual perfection and how to achieve it. The metaphors may be set in the past, but there is enough commonality with the present that this generation can still understand what this great Saint is communicating. He only makes one mistake: Spiritual perfection is not a possibility only for monks; lay people can achieve it as well. This is a book that all can profit from, whether one is just beginning to climb or is near the top.

An Eritrean Oriental Orthodox Tewahedo Nun's Comments
Format: Kindle
For 28 years I served (with a lowercase "s" ) alongside my Eastern Orthodox husband/Archpriest, who reposed in 2018. Now as a Tewahedo Hermitess, with access to the world rather than strict enclosure inside the monastery, little father John Climacus' book serves as a helpful reference guide to me to determine how Eastern (communion) coenobitic monks during post-Chalcedonian Schizm tried to refine and perfect the more ancient Syriac strivings of stages of spiritual perfection started first by the "Sons and Daughters of the Covenant" transformed into a "narrow path to salvation" inside tonsured communities. While we do not use little father John's book as a key "focal point" in our Oriental Churches, it is important to preserve this copy - true to its original content - like all watershed moments in Orthodox Church History, and investigate if there are living parallels of little Father John's system used by Oriental monasteries, written by their respective Hegumens, within the same relevant time period. I am guessing there are probably so, because what Christ truly teaches and inspires, He never usually leaves to one person alone. "Where 2 or 3 are gathered together in My Name, there Am I in the midst of them" is the Peace of the Apostolic covenant of Christ, among the Churches founded by His 12 Apostles - a Peace and a symmetry that still can be found despite the heartbreaking misinformation, bias, and (in some spots of the world) bitter kernels of monastically - engendered hatred towards reunification of Eastern and Oriental communities into one, whole, functional and understood Church. He who has ears, let him hear (and examine)!
