Rich, bold and full of flavour — mackerel remains one of the finest fish in British waters. Each pack contains four generously sized fillets, individually frozen at peak freshness to lock in their distinctive taste and nutritional goodness, with each pack weighing between 430–500g.
Why frozen, and why now?
You may have noticed that fresh Cornish mackerel is harder to come by at the moment, and we want to be upfront about why. Mackerel stocks across the North-East Atlantic have been under significant pressure in recent years. The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) released advice in 2025 indicating that stock levels have been falling and are now below sustainable levels, recommending that landings be reduced by 70% in 2026. Closer to home, the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide has moved mackerel to a rating of 5 ("avoid") across all catch methods in its latest review — a significant step that reflects the wider concern for the species.
Switching to frozen mackerel sourced responsibly allows us to continue offering this wonderful fish while fresh local availability remains uncertain. Freezing at sea or immediately after landing is now widely recognised as an excellent way to preserve both quality and nutrition — in many cases rivalling fresh fish that has spent days in transit.
We'll always be transparent with our customers about where our fish comes from and why. We hope to return to offering fresh Cornish mackerel when stocks recover and conditions improve.
