Designed to replace the M3/M5 Stuart light tanks, the M24 was intentionally kept lightweight with a thin glacis plate (only 25mm thick), though its steep slope increased its effectiveness. Nearly 5,000 M24 Chaffees were produced during World War II, with the first arriving in Europe in November 1944. They were issued to F Company, 2nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Battalion, and F Company, 42nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Battalion, both part of the 2nd Cavalry Group (Mechanized). The following month, during the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, these units were rushed to the southern sector.

After the war, the M24 Chaffee saw action in the Korean War, the Indo-Pakistani War, and French operations in Indochina and Algeria.
