Overview

The Freshwater Clam (Corbicula fluminea) is a compact, rounded bivalve known for its smooth shell and natural ability to filter aquarium water. It improves water clarity by removing suspended particles and microorganisms, making it a popular choice for established aquariums. Best suited for stable, mature tanks with gentle fish.

Origin

Native to East and Southeast Asia, occupying slow-moving rivers, streams, and lakes with sandy or fine gravel substrates.

Feeding

A true filter feeder that consumes:

  • Microalgae
  • Infusoria
  • Phytoplankton
  • Fine suspended detritus

In very clean or newly established aquariums, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or micronized invertebrate foods may be required.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and suitable for calm community tanks with:

  • Tetras & rasboras
  • Small gouramis
  • Corydoras
  • Cherry shrimp and other peaceful inverts
  • Snails

Avoid: Loaches, puffers, crayfish, crabs, and large cichlids that may disturb or damage clams.

Aggression

None. Completely passive and typically remains partially buried in the substrate.

Experience Level

Intermediate. While hardy once established, they require:

  • Mature tanks with stable micro-food levels
  • Excellent water quality
  • Fine sand or soft gravel for burrowing

Most issues arise from starvation or poor water conditions.

  • Temperature: 70–80°F (21–27°C)
  • pH: 6.8–8.0
  • Hardness: 6–18 dGH
  • Notes:
    • Very sensitive to ammonia and nitrite.
    • Avoid strong currents and sharp substrates.

My dog loves it.

I thought I was going to have to return this dog toy because my dog was afraid of the toy, especially the squeaker. But after a while, he finally did start playing with it and now he won’t let the other dogs touch his frog. It’s so bad that if they do touch it, he rips it out or their mouth, jumps up into a chair, and lays on top of it so they can’t get it. He still doesn’t like the squeaker if it’s down in front of him, but if I’m in another room, the squeaker makes him come running. He loves the squirrel I got him too. But the material of the frog seems really durable. The part I like the most of that it’s like a puppet and you can stick your hand in it or an empty bottle of water and then Velcro it shut. If your dog doesn’t like the squeaker, there is a pouch in the mouth of the frog that you can access through this velcroed area and cut it out. Definitely a must have if you have a tough chewer.

This was a pretty good toy. I have three pitbulls. The puppy in my video is 65lbs for reference to the toy. I thought that since it was fluffless she wouldn't try to eat the thing but after a couple of days of tugging it with her brothers the toy's paw came off and I was not fast enough to prevent her from swallowing it. She got rid of it with little GI stress. I will say that even though she's not squeaking it in the video, it has a pretty loud squeak. Overall we had it for four days before 260lbs of pooches were able to get the squeaker out. If you have pits then you know this is 5-star worthy sturdiness.

An instant favorite! It took quite a while for my dog to break the squeaker, too. I love that it uses a water bottle for the crinkle sound, and I'm kind of glad the squeaker finally bit the dust. That works out well for us. It's tough enough that it's not ripped yet. Our dog plays with this toy every day. No fluff to pull out was definitely a plus for me. It's a great toy for the price, and I think small and larger dogs would also enjoy it. Johan is 7 months old, weighs about 40 pounds, and always chooses a favorite toy. This one replaced a worn out toy frog that was smaller, but still treasured. I was so glad that he loves this one just as much. It's a little bit longer than a regular-sized water bottle and has dangly legs. I think you could also put plastic that crinkles inside it, and they would love that too. It has a velcro closure to keep whatever you put in there inside, and he hasn't figured out how to open it so far. Update: We just bought a second one of these because he enjoyed the first one to its conclusion. It lasted longer than most toys (about 4 months with HARD use by a giant puppy), and it is his most favorite soft toy. The original didn't rip or tear, but the velcro got worn out when he figured out how to open it. I probably could have fixed it easily, but since Johan is the goodest boy, I got him a new one.
