Bush Soft Coral – Red (Neospongodes sp.)

(Also known as Red Tree Coral or Red Bush Coral)

Overview

The Red Bush Soft Coral (Neospongodes sp.) is a striking and colourful soft coral known for its branching, tree-like structure and deep red to pink polyps. It forms dense, bushy colonies that sway gracefully in the current, adding vivid contrast and texture to marine aquariums. While beautiful, this species can be moderately challenging, as it often prefers moderate flow and occasional feeding to thrive. It does not contain symbiotic zooxanthellae, meaning it depends more on direct feeding than light for nutrition.

Origin

Found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef. Typically inhabits shaded reef slopes, overhangs, and deeper waters where light is dim and currents bring abundant plankton.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting. Unlike photosynthetic corals, Neospongodes species derive little to no energy from light. Too much direct light can cause tissue recession. Best placed in shaded or lower regions of the tank, such as under rock ledges or overhangs.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong, indirect flow. This keeps polyps extended and helps deliver planktonic food while preventing detritus buildup. Avoid direct blasting from powerheads, which may damage delicate branches.

Feeding

The Red Bush Coral is a non-photosynthetic (NPS) or partially heterotrophic coral that requires regular feeding. Provide small, frequent feedings of:

  • Phytoplankton
  • Zooplankton
  • Marine snow or coral-specific micro foods
  • Finely minced meaty foods (rotifers, copepods, or cyclops)

Feed 2–4 times per week, ideally when polyps are fully extended (usually during low light or night hours).

Placement

Position in the lower to mid-section of the aquarium in an area with gentle to moderate water movement and indirect light. Mount securely to live rock, as colonies can become top-heavy as they grow.

Tank Mates

Compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates. Avoid:

  • Aggressive coral species with strong sweeper tentacles (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea)
  • Predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip soft corals
Aggression

Peaceful, but can release mild chemical deterrents (allelopathy) when crowded by other soft corals. Allow space and ensure good water circulation and carbon filtration to minimise chemical competition.

Experience Level

Intermediate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters, supplemental feeding, and appropriate low-light placement. Long-term success depends on consistent feeding and good nutrient export.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • Hardness (dKH): 8–12
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 gallons (190L) for stable conditions

Maintain excellent water quality with regular partial water changes and protein skimming, as overfeeding can raise nutrient levels.

Perfect for Bread
Size: 2-Quart
I bought this to make the bread in the book "Bittman Bread" by Mark Bittman and Kerri Conan, which I also bought here on Amazon. This Dutch Oven has been working perfectly for the last 6 months of baking. As a bonus, it's much less expensive that the same size Lodge pot. I've got a 5-1/2 quart regular and a 7-1/2 quart enameled both from Lodge and use them all the time for stuff, but I only use this 2 qt for the bread, usually more than once a week. It's great. Look up that "Bittman Bread" book and buy it from Amazon (I don't think you can insert links in the review), then definitely buy this Dutch Oven. I highly recommend both.

Excellent Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven
Color: Red, Size: 5Qt
This Dutch oven has quickly become my favorite piece of cookware in the kitchen. The enamel coating makes cleanup surprisingly easy, even after slow-cooked meals. It heats evenly and keeps food warm for a long time after cooking. I’ve used it for soups, roasts, pasta dishes, and homemade bread with amazing results every time. The red color is beautiful and looks great sitting on the stovetop. It feels heavy and durable without being impossible to handle. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a high-quality and versatile cooking pot.

Great for baking bread
Color: Red, Size: 5Qt
Great quality for a good price. I use this to bake sourdough loaves and it performs superbly! I love the little handle potholders they are the perfect size and provide good protection from the very hot pot. Beautiful color but practical and useful.

Worth the purchase
Color: Green, Size: 5Qt
This is my new favorite kitchen purchase. Soups, dips, rice... It all cooks so evenly and beautifully. It cleans so easily with a rag (not using anything abrasive). I am putting about a tablespoon of oil in the pot after cleaning and using and rubbing into the pan to get it seasoned. I would absolutely recommend this purchase. It's beautiful and functional
