The 'Snowden' in this phenomenal track by Doves, from their 'Some Cities' album, isn't the famous whistleblower, but rather a key character in Joseph Heller's famous WWII anti-war novel 'Catch-22'. Spoiler alert, but at the end of the novel the reader learns with a shock that Snowden has suffered a massive, fatal, but hidden wound in the back of the B-25 Mitchell bomber of which he’s a gunner. He spends much of the novel slowly, agonizingly, dying and thus causing immeasurable trauma to the main character, Yossarian - who, like the reader, has no idea until the big reveal.

I couldn’t find any good images of wounded WWII bomber gunners, and I’m pretty sure this cover shows an Arvo Lancaster, not a B-25 Mitchell, but it’s pretty damned close . . . at least, enough for me.
