Airing at the height of the Vietnam conflict, the duo's hit variety series, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, generated much controversy with its daringly topical humor and youth-oriented musical guests. Despite its popularity, especially with younger viewers, the show's frequent clashes with network censors led to its abrupt cancellation in 1969.
