artist biography
Harry Richard Wichmann was born September 13, 1916 in Stockholm. He was a Swedish painter, illustrator and print maker.
Wichmann was primarily self taught as an artist and undertook independent studies during study trips to Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and England. He received early attention for his realistic art and drawings with Stockholm scenes. He is best known for Stockholm scenes (but also painted other region in Sweden) and interiors.
He showed in both solo and group exhibitions throughout his career. Select he exhibited in several places in the country, including Örebro, Eskilstuna, Umeå and Stockholm. Alongside Walter Söderholm he exhibited at Konstsalong Rålambshof and together with Olle Nordberg and Tore Wideryd in Jönköping. He participated in group exhibitions arranged by Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Sweden's general art association) and in group exhibitions De ungas salong . As an illustrator, he illustrated Åke Wassing's Dödgrävarens son. He also produced a series of sculptures in wood.
Examples of Wichmann’s works are held in the public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Stockholm City Museum and Gustaf VI Adolf's collection.
He passed away on on November 4, 1993.
