“Pollock knows the country’s design history well and the key role that design has in Japanese society. . . . In nearly 500 fully illustrated pages, she profiles 70 architects and designers.” —Architectural Record

This is a unique resource—beautiful, educational, and entertaining—that will appeal to anyone with an interest in Japanese culture, a passion for international design, or just a taste for beautiful products of all kinds.

Huge in scope and scale, featuring tables and chairs, cameras, and telephones, fashion, buildings, vehicles, and more, featuring hundreds of objects and contributions from both Japanese and Western designers inspired by Japan, this volume stands as the definitive work on the subject.

For the Japanese, the concept of design is not limited to functionality and materiality—it is deeply connected with culture and tradition. In this sense, everyday objects become more than their function: They are to be reflected upon, to be touched and cherished.

As mass production became widespread in the postwar period, fascinating cross-cultural exchanges began to take place between Japan and the West. And in recent years, a new generation of designers has taken Japanese creativity into entirely new territory, reconceptualizing the very meaning of design.

Author Naomi Pollock writes, “It doesn’t really matter what the medium is, whether plastic or metal, manufacturers treat the material with the same kind of reverence . . . the attention to detail and, above all, respect for the hand of the artisan, whether a traditional craftsperson or a factory worker. Even the mass-produced or computer-generated can be created with the pride and care of the handmade.”

Some names will be familiar (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA, Issey Miyake, Shigeru Ban) as will be some of the designs (the Sony Walkman, Panasonic’s Panapet R-70 radio, the Aibo robot dog, Yamaha motorcycles, and Shiro Kuramata’s rose-filled Miss Blanche acrylic chair). But there is so much here that even knowledgeable designers will find something new and the different.

Great workout mat
Color: Green
It’s very thick and soft so it makes exercising a lot easier. It rolls easily ready to store. And it seems very durable. It is also flexible for certain exercises for balance.

Very sturdy. Great Quality
Color: Navy Blue
This is a very dense, thick mat. It's great if you have bad knees or just need/want a thicker mat. The carrying strap with velcro closures is easy to use.

Great cushioning, easy storage
Color: Blue
I am so happy I bought this. I do back stretches, and need to be on the floor.. Getting up & down is hard at 77, and carpets are hard. This helps sooo much! I don’t hurt my knees when getting down or getting up. The mat is comfortable and provides plenty of padding. It is easy to roll up and store with the included strap. I am tall, and there is extra length, so my head and feet are on the mat. This was a good purchase! This has not torn, and wipes down easily. It doesn’t attract dog hair, which is another reason I wanted a mat.

Thick & sturdy.
Color: Blue
Great mat! Nice thick, sturdy foam! -- Im using it along my raised garden beds so I can crawl across the area that's covered w wood chips to work. I cover up lumber edges w old staples with one edge too, and can push myself up & slide it along beneath me. Great on my knees and elbows. Eliminates the need to constantly get up & down. Nice thick, sturdy foam! Gets slippery fast if I hit it w the hose!

Durable and Comfortable Yoga Mat That Lasts
Color: Red
The BalanceFrom Go Yoga All Purpose Exercise Mat has proven to be a long-lasting and reliable piece of equipment. After seven years of use, it still holds up well, showing how durable the anti-tear material really is. The thickness provides great cushioning for yoga, stretching, or floor workouts, making it comfortable to use on hard surfaces without slipping. The included carrying strap makes it easy to transport to classes or the gym, and the lightweight design is convenient without sacrificing support. Even after years of use, the mat remains easy to clean and hasn’t worn down the way cheaper mats often do. While the surface may show some signs of age, the overall performance has stayed strong, which makes it an excellent value for the price. Pros: Extremely durable even after years, comfortable cushioning, and convenient with a carry strap included. Cons: The surface can show wear over time, it may feel bulky compared to thinner mats, and the texture may not suit those who prefer a firmer grip. A dependable yoga mat that lasts for years while staying comfortable and practical. For anyone looking for a durable, affordable mat, this one delivers excellent long-term value.
