In considering this year's election I wanted to think about all of the progress that has been made to elect a black president and to nominate a female president. Much of the progress has been made by Women throughout our history as humans, two of those that I hold especially dear are Sojourner Truth and bell hooks.

Our cup collaboration came from the idea of Founding Mothers and the desire to celebrate the women who’ve gotten us here. My cup offers a great frame for Roberto’s drawings, and relates well to his own work, which also references historical vessels. Through the illustrations of two strong, African-American female activists, Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) and bell hooks (1952- ), who’ve fought tirelessly for suffrage, emancipation, and equality, we wanted to add an air of positivity and conviction to the contentious discussions during this presidential race. I hope our contribution can spotlight and stand for the ongoing need for racial and gender equality and women’s rights, as well as the importance and tenacity of minorities in our United States.
