The album served as a de facto introduction to the duo in 2001, collecting songs on CD (and later, vinyl) that had only previously been available on hard-to-find singles and EPs.
At the time, the album's combination of crisp beats, discordant synth patterns, and Nicola Kuperus' detached monotone sounded like a broadcast from a forgotten past. The duo had steeped their craft in the analog sounds of forebears like Kraftwerk but applied an ultramodern, menacing sheen.
Their visual aesthetic was just as important - embodied by a signature look and Kuperus' photographs which were featured across their album packaging. Two decades later, the record's utility endures and its influence is even more apparent when surveying the state of minimal wave and dark dance music.
