artist biography
Jean Olof Carsten Hvistendahl was born February 21, 1901 in Gothenburg. He was a Swedish artist.

Hvistendahl was the son of Norwegian consul Jean Olof Erikson and his Norwegian mother, the artist Signe Hvistendahl-Erikson (1881-1943). After finishing Gothenburg's co-educational high school, he studied at Valands målarskola (painting school) from 1920 to 1921 and then again 1924 ti 1925 with Tor Bjurström as his teacher. He studied with Henrik Sørensen in Paris in 1921-1922 and 1923-1924, and again in Holmsbu by the Oslofjord in 1926 and 1928. In Paris he studied in 1922 to 1923 with Othon Friesz at the Académie Moderne in Paris. Finally, he studied at Wilhelmsons målarskola (painting school) in Stockholm in 1925, and between 1926 and 1929 at the   Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm.

Hvistendahl painted portraits and figurative works as well as landscapes with coastal and mountain scenes in a light colour palette. He is recognised as one of the Gothenburg colourists . Many of his archipelago landscapes are from Fläskö outside Fjällbacka in northern Bohuslän, where he came to buy a second home. He executed several murals and mosaics in public buildings and private offices.

Carsten Hvistendahl was a diligent exhibitor showing his work in solo and group exhibitions. Select solo shows include Gothenburg in 1926, 1930, 1937 and 1943, in Stockholm at Galerie Moderne in 1928, at Konstnärshuset in 1936, at Modern konst i hemmiljö (Modern art in the home) in 1944, in Borås in 1944, in Uddevalla in 1944 and shows Jönköping, Upsala, Örebro. Some of the group shows he participated in include Västsvensk konst (West Swedish Art) in Liljevalchs, several of the Sveriges allm. konstförenings (Swedish Art Association) salons, the Dansk-svenska utställningen (The Danish-Swedish Exhibition) at Kunstneres hus in Oslo in 1935, the Nordiska utställningen (Nordic Exhibition) in the Mässhallen in 1939, the Västsvensk konst (West Swedish Art) in Lidköping in 1946. 

Examples of Hvistendahl’s work are held in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, Gothenburg City Museum, Gothenburg University Library, Gävle Museum  Borås Art Museum and Uddevalla Museum.

He passed away at the age of 71 in his home town of Gothenburg on November 13, 1972.
