Love Hearts feel as though they must have been invented for Valentine’s Day, preferably by someone in lace with a fondness for sighing. In reality, their ancestors were 19th-century medicinal lozenges stamped with short practical messages due to the limits of early machinery — more instructional than romantic.

By the 1950s, the messages had softened into affection, though still delivered with charming brevity. Phrases like “BE MINE” were reportedly added after market research revealed that many people preferred sweets to say such things on their behalf. Love Hearts became a low-risk communication system: declarations without eye contact.
