The Dell 12 TB Hard Drive is a strategic upgrade for any server, storage array, or workstation that demands massive capacity paired with dependable performance. This 3.5-inch internal drive is engineered for enterprise workloads, delivering a robust combination of high storage density, reliable data access, and optimized read performance. With a 12 TB capacity, you gain the ability to consolidate backups, archives, media libraries, and frequently accessed datasets into a single, scalable solution. The drive uses a SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) interface to provide higher data transfer speeds, improved reliability, and greater queue depths than typical consumer drives, making it well suited for dense, read-intensive environments such as databases, virtual machines, content repositories, and high-traffic storage pools. Built to excel in data centers and enterprise deployments, this drive blends Dell’s reliability with enterprise-grade features to support long-term operation and easier management within RAID configurations and backplane architectures. If you’re looking to extend your storage footprint without sacrificing performance, this Dell drive is designed to deliver steady, predictable reads while maintaining energy efficiency and rugged endurance in demanding conditions.

  • Massive capacity for consolidation: With 12 terabytes of storage in a single 3.5-inch drive, you can reduce sprawl, simplify data management, and free up bays for other critical workloads. This capability is especially valuable for backup targets, archival storage, media libraries, and large-scale datasets that require frequent access or rapid recovery times. The high-density design helps you scale gracefully as data grows while keeping your infrastructure footprint compact.
  • High-performance SAS interface: The 12 Gb/s SAS interface delivers significantly faster data transfers and more reliable performance under heavy I/O workloads. SAS provides better error detection, higher reliability, and stronger support for parallel I/O operations compared with traditional SATA drives, giving you a smoother experience when multiple users or systems access data concurrently. This is ideal for server, virtualized, and database environments where sustained throughput matters.
  • 7,200 RPM for balanced throughput and reliability: The drive spins at 7,200 RPM, offering a practical balance between sequential throughput and random access performance. This rotational speed supports predictable read performance for streaming workloads and back-end data access, helping reduce latency in read-heavy scenarios while keeping power usage in check for data-center deployments.
  • Optimized for Read-Intensive workloads: As a Read Intensive (RI) hard drive, it is tuned for workloads that perform frequent reads more often than writes, such as database query caching, read-heavy virtual machines, media streaming libraries, and archival access patterns. This focus on read performance helps ensure fast data retrieval, quicker query responses, and improved application performance in environments where read operations dominate.
  • Enterprise-grade reliability in a 3.5" form factor: Designed for servers and storage arrays, this Dell enterprise drive combines durable construction, consistent performance, and a proven track record for reliability in multi-drive configurations. The 3.5" form factor fits standard server backplanes and hot-swap bays commonly used in data centers, enabling straightforward deployment into existing infrastructures while maintaining compatibility with Dell support ecosystems and enterprise RAID controllers.

Technical Details of Dell 12 TB SAS Read-Intensive 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

  • Capacity: 12 TB
  • Form Factor: 3.5-inch internal drive
  • Interface: SAS 12 Gb/s
  • Drive Type: Read Intensive (RI)
  • Rotational Speed: 7,200 RPM

How to Install Dell 12 TB SAS Read-Intensive 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

  • Power down the server or workstation and unplug all power sources. Ground yourself to prevent static discharge before handling the drive.
  • Open the chassis and locate an available 3.5-inch drive bay that matches your backplane or RAID controller configuration.
  • Remove any necessary blanking plates or screws from the drive bay, then align the Dell 12 TB drive with the backplane connectors and drive bays.
  • Slide the drive into the bay until it seats firmly, then secure it with the appropriate screws or latching mechanism as required by your enclosure.
  • Connect the SAS data cable and the power cable to the drive, ensuring secure, clean connections. Reattach the chassis cover and power up the system.
  • Enter the system BIOS/UEFI or the RAID controller management utility to recognize the new drive. If adding to an existing array, configure the disk as part of the array or initialize it per your storage policy. Update firmware if needed and verify SMART data and health indicators after initialization.
  • In your operating system or virtualization environment, verify that the drive appears as expected. If using VMware or another hypervisor, ensure compatibility with your host hardware and storage controller, and allocate the new drive to the appropriate datastore or virtual machine storage tier.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Read Intensive (RI) and how does it differ from other drives? Read Intensive drives are optimized for scenarios with frequent read operations and lower write activity. They often deliver strong read throughput and reliable performance for databases, caching layers, and archival access, while not necessarily prioritizing heavy write workloads. If your workload reads more data than it writes, RI drives can offer a favorable balance of performance, density, and cost for enterprise deployments.
  • What systems are compatible with a Dell 12 TB SAS Read-Intensive drive? This 3.5-inch SAS drive is designed for servers, storage arrays, and backplanes that support SAS connectivity. Compatibility depends on your backplane, RAID controller, and host server specifications. Always verify with your hardware vendor’s compatibility matrix and Dell support resources to ensure proper integration into your environment.
  • What kind of performance can I expect in a typical read-heavy workload? In read-intensive scenarios, you can expect solid, steady sequential read throughput and dependable latency characteristics due to the SAS interface and enterprise-grade construction. Actual performance varies with the RAID configuration, data layout, controller, and workload mix, but the drive is optimized to maintain consistent read access under sustained load.
  • Is VMware supported with this drive? Compatibility depends on the underlying hardware, RAID controller, and storage configuration. VMware deployments should consult the VMware Hardware Compatibility Guide and Dell’s enterprise storage documentation to confirm that the drive and controller combination is supported in your specific server and hypervisor version.
  • What warranty or support accompanies this Dell enterprise drive? Enterprise drives typically come with a vendor-backed warranty and support options. Availability and terms vary by region and purchasing agreement. Check Dell’s official product page or your approved Dell channel for the exact warranty period and support services included with your purchase.

Awesome Boards….BUT the Smell!!!!
Color: Carbonized, Size: 3-piece
I’d love to give these 5 stars, they are heavy, well made, smooth, deep juice grooves, just nice….but the smell! I washed them, then used vinegar on them, set them outside over night, washed them again….its better but still present. I’d love some guidance on this. I’m hoping it goes away in a few days. It’s like a very strong woodsy smell that actually made my whole kitchen smell like these boards! Edit: Ok, here's what I did. Washed, let dry, coated and scrubbed with apple cider vinegar, set them in a high air flow area for 24 hours (I put mine outside on the patio over night), washed and scrubbed again, let dry, scrubbed with lemons and salt, let dry, washed again. Finally, there is still a slight smell if you push them against your nose but that seems to be fading as well. So, great boards if you want to go stubbornly go through the smell removal process. I don't think it's a chemical smell, I think it's processed bamboo that is shrink wrapped in air tight packaging too soon after manufacturing. Anyway, I'll move this to 4 stars....but lots of work involved here!

Don’t worry about the smell!
Color: Carbonized, Size: 3-piece
These are great for the price, though I’ve never had any desire or need to use the smallest one. They smell strongly of BBQ at first, but from what I’ve read that’s a natural result of a heat treatment used to increase it’s durability and dark color (the heat cooks the sugars in the bamboo which creates the scent). Anyways, I’ve had them for awhile now and the scent is long gone.
