He grew up in East Tennessee and was elected to the Tennessee state legislature and eventually the U.S. Congress in 1827. He vehemently opposed many of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, especially the Indian Removal Act, which led to his defeat in the 1831. He was reelected in ’33 but lost again in 1835 in a bitter election. In early 1836, he took part in the Texas Revolution and was likely executed at the Battle of the Alamo after being captured by the Mexican Army.
