Species Overview:
Sirens belong to a unique group of amphibians known for their completely aquatic lifestyle and external gills. Depending on the species, they can range from the smaller Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia) to the massive and recently described Reticulated Siren (Siren reticulata), reaching over 2 feet in length.

Appearance:
Sirens have smooth, slippery skin, elongated gray to dark olive bodies, and branch-like red or pink gills that constantly filter oxygen from the water. Despite lacking hind legs, they move with fluid, snake-like precision.

Habitat:
These amphibians are found in slow-moving swamps, marshes, ditches, and ponds, where they hide among vegetation and debris. In captivity, they thrive in large, planted aquariums with clean, cool, well-oxygenated water and plenty of hiding spaces.

Behavior:
Sirens are nocturnal and secretive, often resting during the day and becoming active at night. They are solitary and low-energy but endlessly fascinating to observe. Despite their mysterious appearance, they are hardy and adapt well to captive life when properly housed.

Diet:
Carnivorous and opportunistic feeders, Sirens enjoy a diet of bloodworms, earthworms, small fish, snails, and commercial aquatic amphibian foods. They use a suction-feeding mechanism to capture prey.

Lifespan:
With proper care, Sirens can live 10–20 years in captivity, making them a long-term and rewarding addition to any aquatic setup.
