Upgrade your enterprise data protection with the Quantum Scalar i40/i80 Tape Drive Module engineered for IBM LTO-5 tapes and powered by a fast 6 Gb/s SAS interface. This module is designed to slot into Quantum’s respected Scalar i40 and i80 libraries, delivering reliable, scalable backup and archival performance for midrange to large data centers. With IBM LTO-5 compatibility, it provides broad media availability, strong interoperability, and a mature ecosystem of backup software and routines you already trust. The drive emphasizes efficiency through a Linear Serpentine data path, which optimizes tape motion for smoother streaming, steadier throughput, and gentle media wear—extending the life of your backup cartridges while reducing operational interruptions. Whether you’re consolidating legacy backups or building a future-proof archiving strategy, the Scalar i40/i80 Tape Drive Module is built to deliver consistent throughput, robust data integrity, and straightforward service in a rack-ready, enterprise-grade package.

  • High-capacity LTO-5 media in native and compressed form: Native capacity of 1.50 TB with up to 3 TB compressed capacity, allowing you to maximize usable storage per cartridge, minimize media handling, and lower overall backup windows for large-scale environments.
  • Fast 6 Gb/s SAS interface: Enables rapid data transfer between the tape drive and your storage infrastructure, improving backup and restore speeds, reducing bottlenecks, and ensuring compatibility with modern server farms and storage networks.
  • IBM LTO-5 compatibility and proven interoperability: Certified for IBM LTO-5 media with broad media availability, ensuring seamless integration with leading backup software suites and an ecosystem you can rely on for long-term retention and archival strategies.
  • Efficient data path with Linear Serpentine design: The Linear Serpentine data path optimizes tape motion for steady throughput, lower mechanical wear, and consistent performance during extended archival cycles and large transfer jobs.
  • Easy integration with Scalar i40/i80 libraries: Engineered to plug into Quantum Scalar i40 and i80 library environments, delivering scalable protection, simplified field service, and dependable operation within a complete data-protection solution.

How to install Quantum Scalar i40/i80 Tape Drive Module

Installing the Quantum Scalar i40/i80 Tape Drive Module is a straightforward process designed to minimize downtime and keep your data protection strategy on track. Begin by planning the installation in accordance with your library’s maintenance window and vendor guidelines. Confirm that you have the correct module for your Scalar i40 or i80 chassis, and verify firmware compatibility with your library’s current version to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

1) Power down and safely isolate the library. Lock out and tag out procedures should be followed as per your facility’s safety protocols to prevent accidental power or drive operations during installation.

2) Prepare the bay. Remove the existing slot cover or the old module, if applicable, and inspect the bay for any debris or foreign material. Ensure the backplane connectors and mounting rails are clean and free of obstruction to ensure a smooth seating of the new module.

3) Align and insert. Carefully align the Quantum Scalar i40/i80 Tape Drive Module with the bay’s connectors. Gently slide the module into the backplane until it seats fully, then secure it with the appropriate screws or fasteners specified by the library’s hardware guidelines. Avoid forcing the module, which could damage connectors or the backplane.

4) Connect interfaces and power. Attach the SAS interface cables from the library backplane or host interface to the drive’s connectors, ensuring a solid, secure fit. Reconnect power, and verify that all cables have sufficient clearance and are not pinched by adjacent hardware.

5) Power up and run diagnostics. Restore power to the library and enter the library’s management interface. Run a hardware diagnostic to confirm the module is recognized, the SAS links initialize correctly, and there are no fault conditions. Check for firmware compatibility messages and update if required.

6) Validate operation and media readiness. Perform a test read/write operation on a known-good LTO-5 cartridge to verify data integrity and throughput. Confirm the library recognizes LTO-5 media and can inventory tapes accurately. Schedule a brief backup job to ensure the drive supports the expected data flow and that error rates remain within your service levels.

7) Document and monitor. Record the installation in your asset management system, including serial numbers, firmware levels, and the bay location. Set up monitoring alerts for drive health, media retention, and throughput to catch issues early and minimize downtime.

Tip: If you’re upgrading from an older generation or consolidating library slots, plan a phased deployment to avoid service disruption. Regularly review firmware and software compatibility notes from Quantum to stay aligned with best practices and recommended maintenance windows. Proper handling with anti-static precautions and careful handling of tapes will help maintain media integrity during and after installation.

This is a must have!
Size: Upgrade Queen (2 Pack)
One of my favorite purchases! I love that you can take stuffing out as needed. My husband kept majority of his in because he likes a full pillow. I prefer a flatter, soft pillow so I took out probably half of the stuffing. We both love them!

Excellent pillow.
Size: Upgrade Queen (2 Pack)
Wow these pillows are fantastic!!! First off they are good quality and sized as described. I'm forced to sleep on my back since I use a cpap every night. They suggest taking some filling out for "back sleepers". But in my case, I am disabled, overweight, and the way I position myself on a pillow is probably unique. I have a little of my shoulders, head and neck on the pillow. I didn't have to remove any filling. It was pretty good at first and after about a few day/nights, everything settled in just perfectly. It's truly one the finest pillows I've owned to date. (Part of my disability is a very painful neck & muscle malady, my head leans far to the right. Basically feels like a crick in your neck that never goes away. It's called tortacollis or dystonia depending who you talk to.) Because of this, I have truly spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on different types and styles of pillows. A very select few have worked out fairly well over time until I found this one. As I said in the beginning, this is an excellent pillow and a great value as well. Hopefully this will work as well or even better for others. I purchased a 2 pack this time, 1 for home and the other for our RV. Definitely buying. another 2 pack to keep for future replacements. Pillows simply don't last forever. They get funky in time. No matter how clean you try to stay with bedding and personal hygiene, it just happens eventually. Sweet dreams. :~)

Incredibly thick and firm pillows. Not great for stomach or side sleepers. They alway end up on the floor cause we find them uncomfortable. Don’t recommend, practically unusable

This does actually provide a cooling effect, and it's very comfortable! The accompanying literature is helpful too. I believe this to be a quality pillow for the price.

Most comfortable pillow I’ve ever slept on
Size: Queen (1 Count), Color: Crescent White(cooling)
This is the most comfortable pillow I have ever slept on. It doesn't mash down like other pillows. Cradles my neck perfectly plus it’s cool. I broke my neck a couple of years ago and this pillow feels very good and comfortable. Definitely recommend to everyone. Ive used it since May and it’s retained its shape.
