The Human League was an integral part of 80s new wave and synth-pop, and a key member in the second British Invasion of North America in the early 80s. This song was a big part of it, with it's dual narratives: the relationship crisis from his point of view, and then again from her point of view. It was refreshing, the relative sophistication of the lyrics: not only a cogent story, but told Rashomon-style from different perspectives.
So I set myself a challenge with a paired cover. One had to reflect her story; the other his; the rags-to-riches progression was necessary; the cocktail bar in his story and the achievement of success in hers; the characters in both had to be convincingly similar.
Then, on top of that, I decided that the layout of the covers had to allow for the title, songwriters, and record label/publishing details to occupy the same space on the page, to really make it clear that this was one story and one song filtered through two lenses. I wanted them to look like a perfect matched pair/diptych together. I ended finding two covers that weren't originally designed to be together: they're separate independent books and characters. Check, check, and check. I’m very pleased with how they turned out.
