梅酒 — Umeshu, the fun, fruity end
Umeshu starts as ume steeped in alcohol and sugar, and from that base Nakata builds a whole family of flavours. Here the fruit is Wakayama peach, blended in as 100% puree, giving a soft, juicy, summery drink quite different from the classic. Wakayama is famous for its peaches as well as its ume, so this is two local fruits in one glass. Nakata Foods, founded in Tanabe in 1897, sits beneath the UNESCO-listed Kumano Kodo trails.

Is this a good one for umeshu beginners?
Very much so. Its soft peach sweetness and lower 8% strength make it the most approachable bottle in the range, ideal for anyone new to umeshu or who finds spirits too strong. Serve it cold and it drinks almost like a grown-up peach soft drink, while still carrying the real ume fruit underneath. From here, the classic white is the natural next step.

What does it taste like?
Like ripe, juicy peach with the rounded fruit of ume underneath. It is soft, sweet and gentle rather than sharp, and at 8% it is light and easy to drink. The most approachable, just-for-fun bottle in the Nakata range.
How strong is it?
8% ABV, lighter than the classic 12% umeshu and much lighter than a spirit, closer to a fortified wine in strength. That makes it an easy, low-key drink, especially served cold over ice on a warm day.
How should I store it?
Keep it out of direct sunlight and heat, and serve it well chilled. As a fruit-forward, lower-strength drink it is best enjoyed fresh, so once opened keep it refrigerated and drink within a few months for the brightest peach flavour.
