The VALA sweater is worked from the bottom up in a pattern of knit and purl stitches. First, the bottom edge is worked sideways while casting on stitches for the body at one edge along the way. Then the piece is joined for working in the round in pattern with each side marked by two stitches worked in stocking stitch throughout. When reaching the armholes, stitches are places on hold for each armhole, and the body is set aside. 
The sleeves begin with an edge like that on the body. The sleeves are then worked in the round in pattern with increases along two marked stitches worked in stocking stitch at the underside of the arm. At the underarm, stitches are put on hold for the armholes, and front, back and sleeves are joined on one needle for working the yoke in the round. Raglan decreases shape the yoke, and short rows shape the neckline. Finally, the neckline is finished off with an i-cord cast-off.
