Die unabhängige Brennerei Glengyle wurde im Jahr 1872 von William Mitchell gegründet und stellte über ein halbes Jahrhundert hinweg einen typischen Campbeltown Malt her, bevor das Unternehmen 1925 seine Tore schloss. Mehr als 70 Jahre lang sah es so aus, als wäre diese Entscheidung endgültig. Um die Jahrtausendwende jedoch entschlossen sich Winifred Ewing und Hedley Wright, beide Nachfahren der Familie Mitchell, mit gewachsenem Wissen in die neue Zeit zu gehen: Nach einer Aufbauphase von vier Jahren wurde die Destillerie am 25. März 200 4 feierlich wiedereröffnet. Dass der neue Malt „Kilkerran“ getauft wurde, spiegelt den Stolz auf die lange Tradition des Whiskybrennens in der Region wider: Der Name ist abgeleitet von „Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain“, eine frühe christliche Siedlung, die einst dort stand, wo man heute Campbeltown findet.
