The Mk II Spitfire differed little externally from the Mk Ia but featured a 1175HP Rolls -Royce Merlin XII engine upgraded from 1050HP in the Mk 1a. This gave the Mark II a top speed of 360mph at 19,500ft and a service ceiling of 36,500ft.
