Bryana Says
"A bird may love a fish, but where would they live?"
Drew Barrymore's character asks this of the eccentric inventor (Leonardo Da Vinci for some reason) in the 1998 film "Ever After," and it's always been my favorite iteration of the old proverb about the bird and the fish.
I certainly think there's great wisdom in the idea that not all couplings are compatible, and I do believe that many relationships and marriages are dysfunctional and should be ended. But this particular maxim always gets my imagination churning: where *would* they live? it asks. It wants to solve the riddle. This is my light-hearted attempt to put that answer into a painting.
In my own life, marriage has been one of the brightest things to come along. And one of the things I’ve changed my mind about since my single days is that I no longer believe the most important ingredient for a healthy relationship is identical beliefs. Instead, I think stability and happiness in marriage is dependent on mutual willingness to compromise, determination to prioritize the health of the relationship, and a commitment to treat one another’s different needs, backgrounds, and beliefs with respect.
My husband and I are fortunate in that we do see eye to eye on most of the things we consider to be of importance. But our marriage is ultimately stabilized by the knowledge that we each have the freedom to develop, grow, and change, and that shifts in our individual beliefs are not a threat to our partnership. This kind of freedom is such a safe place, and I knew I couldn’t put all of it into a painting, but thought I’d at least tell you about some of what went into this piece.
