Designed to excel in a wide variety of production applications—social media, streaming, podcasting, and live events—the RODECaster Video blends the best of HD video switching technology with the familiar studio-grade audio control of previous RODECasters. The console offers intuitive control over both video and audio sources with its onboard controls, 2" touchscreen display, and rotary encoder. A variety of connectivity options, including HDMI and USB-C ports, accommodate UVC video sources as well as both analog and digital audio sources. Up to 20 possible audio sources, or nine stereo channels, can be connected to the RODECaster Video using both wired and wireless connections. Add the RODECaster Video to your preexisting RODE audio ecosystem using the USB-C audio ports or RODE Central software for advanced device configuration.

Video Interface
  • The RODECaster Video features nine mix-effect layers that can simultaneously display in both preview and program views. Two downstream keyers toggle overlays and logo, two chroma-keyers toggle different backgrounds, and two media players can play simultaneous MP4 video, PNG/JPG photos, or WAV audio from an inserted microSD card.
  • Multiview allows you to visualize both the program and preview, all the live inputs with scene and media thumbnails, the audio mixer and channel status, recording/network/storage status as well as runtime, date, and time information. Non-destructive setup means the process can be done live or configured as a saved scene without interrupting the flow of your production.
  • Switch between six 1080p60 video sources—four HDMI and two USB-C—and create up to seven complex scenes with multiple layers of video, media, and graphics. Save these scenes and recall them with the touch of a button.
  • Configure the two HDMI outputs to connect displays and view preview, program, and multiview feeds. Use the program feed to see what is being streamed/recorded and the preview feed to view inputs, scenes, graphics, or media sources before they go live.
Audio Sources
  • Two studio-grade combo XLR-1/4" jacks on the console are equipped with low-noise, high-gain Revolution Preamps to ensure pristine audio capture from XLR microphones and instruments.
  • Use digital USB-C ports to connect RODE USB microphones, the RODECaster Pro II, or Duo Audio Production Studios. Other USB-C ports support 2-in/2-out multichannel outputs, mix-minus, and MFi protocols.
  • Internal wireless receivers can connect RODE series IV wireless microphones to the console, like the Wireless GO II and Wireless PRO.
  • Aphex VoxLab audio processing equips the RODECaster Video with EQ, compressor, noise gate, high-pass filter, de-esser, Aural Exciter, Big Bottom, and Compellor effects per channel. Integrated preamps provide up to 75 dB input gain and -131.5 dBV equivalent input noise.
  • Mix and process audio onboard using the touchscreen and rotary encoder or the software mixer in RODE Central.
Intuitive Controls
  • The RODECaster Video prioritizes scene-based switching with an intuitive control layout. This gives users quicker access to the tools they need to create dynamic content without needing to access complicated settings. The front panel of the device includes a wide variety of controls specific to certain features.
  • Automatic chroma keying makes replacing backgrounds with media or live video inputs a breeze. Apply transparency to use the input in scenes or with various backgrounds. Choose between blue and green screen with advanced controls.
  • Seven media buttons load video clips, images, and sounds onto a microSD card for use in your production. Two internal video players allow you to transition from one to another in your scene compositions.
  • Seven graphic buttons load images with transparency. Dynamically trigger graphics to transition over an input or scene.
Inspect Button
When pressed, the Inspect feature gives you a detailed snapshot of what video input is assigned to it as well as media, graphics, and layout information on the integrated screen. Preview the button in your Multiview while maintaining the ability to instantly switch between sources.

Intelligent Auto-Switching
The RODECaster Video's intelligent auto-switching makes for seamless and creative hands-free switching between video sources. Any audio input can be linked to any video source, allowing intelligent level detection to automatically trigger switching when your talent is speaking to follow the conversation. Switching priorities and screen time algorithms give it a natural feel as if a producer or technical director were calling the shots.

Intuitive Streaming and Recording
Stream up to 100 Mb/s directly using RTMP to major platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook Live via integrated Wi-Fi 6 or Ethernet connection. Real-time signal health reporting is displayed on your multiview. Record directly to an external USB storage device, including isolated (ISO) recording for more flexible postproduction workflows. You can record your program feed as an H.264/AVC MP4 file with embedded AAC stereo mix. Multiple audio tracks can be recorded as nine independent stereo WAV files.

RODE Central
Use the RODE Central companion software when connected to a computer to adjust more advanced features of the RODECaster Video. Construct scenes using remote control, configure automatic switching based on audio inputs, mix audio, and configure streaming settings and profiles as well as adjust advanced settings and customizations. The software supports macOS and Windows operating systems.

Custom Scene Builder
The scene builder in RODE Central allows you to create a completely customized scene from scratch. Select a RODE preset with default layouts and themes for your keying backgrounds or video borders. A live RTMP feed will update to show your changes in real-time.

Thought Provoking
Format: Kindle
I bought this book after I heard the author on a podcast. Growing up in the US we have been inundated with the story that the collapse of the Soviet Union was an inevitable triumph of liberal, Western values. I had my doubts. Even poorly run dictatorships can muddle along for years. What the author did was center Gorbachev in the story. He was the eye of the storm. It was the terrible combination of Gorbachev’s ambitious idealism and gross ineptitude that led to the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Unlike much of Marxist historical narratives which emphasize the forces of history; the author shows that it’s individuals who shape events and are shaped by them. A different person than Gorbachev could have turned the tide in a different direction and left us a different world than we have today. This is a history book that teaches lessons not just about the Soviet Union but about human history in general.

A compelling account of the fall of the USSR
Format: Kindle
Zubok describes blow by blow the series of decisions that sent the USSR towards disaster. Gorbachev, widely hated in Russia, comes across as principled but indecisive, ignorant of economics, and incapable of translating his worship of Lenin into coherent action. The book reads like a thriller despite the density of facts. Zubok is a pessimist, but his thesis is convincing.

Fascinating, an against the grain account of the perestroika era
Format: Kindle
Gorbachev is hailed as a hero in the West but the book tells the story of a meek, naive individual that precipitated the fall of the Soviet Union creating suffering and an a!most unprecedented calamity.

A masterfully falsified history of the late Soviet developments
Format: Paperback
This book represents academic propaganda, providing some interesting insights into important events. Some details are true, but some crucial details are omitted. It represents a sanitized version of Russia's modern history. It provides misleading information about Gorbachev's constitutional reforms, aimed at partitioning of 15 republics into 53 confederation entities. Originally, the targeted republics were Kazakhstan, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, etc. Those conflicts were manufactured by the Soviet center to discredit "nationalists," facilitate the partition of national republics, and grant Moscow right to protect ethnic minorities. According to Starovoitova, Bakatin, Yakovlev, and a few other primary sources, the Soviet security services led special operations in the Caucasus and Central Asia to provoke those conflicts. Zubok avoids citing those parts. Using the imperial approach of "divide and rule," Moscow attempted to become a peacekeeper in the conflicts it created between different ethnicity. In addition to fragmenting the republics with well-developed national identities, Gorbachev's new constitution would revoke their right to leave the USSR, written in Lenin's 1922 Constitution (Shakhnazarov, 1992). Zubok does not explain any of it. His book is an effort to protect the truth and conceal facts with Russian myths and lies about nationalism (also referred to as Nazism). Notably, Zubok does not recognize non-Russian republics and describes them as "territories." He mentions Pitsunda as a resort on the Black Sea, not as Georgia. For lying about the genocidal ethnic cleansing conducted by the Russian military against the Georgian population of Abkhazia, Zubok owes apology to the victims of conflicts and wars initiated by Gorbachev and carried on by Yeltsin. The story about "the hardliners coup against Gorbachev" is also a big fat lie. American scholars, Amy Knight, John Dunlop, and William Odom provide more accurate insights. For Russian sources, read Marshal Shaposhnikov or Aleksandr Lebed's memoirs (1995) and listen to Gennady Yanaev's interview (2009). According to Mitrokhin archives (original), the August 1991 coup was an active measure the KGB developed per Gorbachev's request. The so-called coup was part of Gorbachev's constitutional reform, which would lead to the removal of unfriendly leaders (including Yeltsin) from the republics. It failed because the Soviet military brass, foremost Pavel Grachev, had defected to Yeltsin earlier in 1991. When you read a book by a seasoned Russian propagandist, like Zubok or Trenin, take it with a grain of salt, because it will always contain a mix of lies and truth.

An important work and worth the time.
Format: Hardcover
Real scholarship addressing difficult but important topics in history, economic history, and development. What every economist should read to think much more deeply about how institutions, culture, and human agency interact. At the same time, scholars like the three co-authors demonstrate that there still remains the possibility of doing work that isn’t larded with ideological or activist posturing. Highly recommended.
