Some Girls arrived at a critical juncture for the Rolling Stones. By the late 1970s, their popularity was waning amid the rise of disco, punk, and newer rock acts. Legal troubles surrounded Keith Richards, and for much of the album, Mick Jagger took the creative lead. Drawing on the energy of New York’s dance clubs and the raw spirit of punk, the band recharged their sound with a leaner, more urgent approach.
Recorded in Paris between October 1977 and February 1978, Some Girls was the first album to feature Ronnie Wood as a full-time member. The stable five-man lineup helped focus the sessions, which yielded a stripped down set of tracks that balanced disco rhythms with garage rock grit. The album also features standout performances from harmonica player Sugar Blue, especially on “Miss You” and the title track.
Despite controversy over its original cover design and some lyrics, the album was a major commercial success. It topped the charts in the United States and became the band’s best-selling album there, with six million copies certified by 2000. “Miss You” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and other singles like “Beast of Burden,” “Shattered,” and “Respectable” became enduring staples of the Stones’ catalog.
Critically, Some Girls was hailed as a return to form after the mixed reception of Black and Blue. It earned the Stones their only Grammy nomination for Album of the Year and has remained one of their most celebrated records, praised for its blend of classic Stones swagger with the pulse of late 1970s pop culture.
