　　西元1849年，英國占領了錫克王國的領土，將印度大部分土地交由英屬東印度公司直接管轄，或與各土邦簽訂軍事保護條約，間接統治，印度全境因此在19世紀中葉完全成為英國的殖民地。然而，英屬東印度公司的重稅導致印度社會荒廢，經濟停滯不前，土邦對英國的統治也越來越不滿，西元1857年，「印度土兵」群起造反，這場日後被稱為「印度大叛亂」的民族反抗運動就此蔓延開來……
