The watch
Seiko QR from 1984 in true new old stock condition. It stands out with a sharply faceted crystal and a linen-textured dial that shifts between different shades of green depending on the light. The angular case has that bold early 80s look, reminiscent of Seiko’s Vanac designs.

The watch is in excellent NOS condition. The case is mint, and the original bracelet is still tight and well preserved. The crystal shows a few very small marks near the lower edge, only visible on close inspection. The day display can be set to Japanese Kanji or English, and the quickset function works exactly as it should.

Details
The Seiko QR lineup was one of the first commercially available quartz watches, and was extremely high end for its time, commanding a launch price of ~50,000 Yen which was comparable to Grand Seikos of that era.

The quartz crisis
The "quartz crisis" was a major turning point in the watch industry during the 1970s and 1980s, driven by the rise of quartz technology. Companies like Seiko led the way, offering watches that were more accurate, more affordable, and easier to maintain than traditional mechanical models.

With the launch of the first quartz wristwatch, the Astron, in 1969, Seiko showed the world what quartz could achieve. Swiss watchmakers, known for their mechanical craftsmanship, were slow to react and lost much of their market share. The crisis forced the Swiss industry to restructure and helped shape a future where traditional watchmaking and modern quartz innovation could exist side by side.
