artist biography
Staffan Anders Einar Wirén was born 14 November 1926 in Lundsberg. He was a Swedish print maker, graphic designer and illustrator.
He was the son of lecturer Axel Einar Wirén and Agnes Disa Birgitta Hannerz. His wife was illustrator Eva Arkstedt-Wirén. He studied at Anders Beckman's advertising school in Stockholm from 1945 to 1947 and through self-study during trips to the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. His produced numerous illustrations for advertising brochures and posters all in his distinct style. As an illustrator, he produced drawings for magazines, newspapers and illustrated and designed the cover for Stig Kassman's book Vart flög Jan and Ingen radder för ABC nor for 1-2-3 which he drew for Sparbanken. Among his popular designs is the iconic 1960 SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) featuring a stylised jetliner in classic mid century modern style. He participated in the exhibitions Swedish Advertising Art at Lilla gallery and International Posters at Galerie Blanche as well as an exhibition with Nordic Artists in Stockholm. He has been represented in several of the Svensk Form and Swedish poster artists' exhibitions in Sweden and abroad. As an illustrator, he was included in the numerous times in International Poster Annual, Idea and Graphis, among other notable publications.
Wirén passed away in 2011.
