The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was released on November 15, 1977, by RSO Records. Prior to the release of Michael Jackson's Thriller, it was the best-selling album in music history and remains among the best-selling soundtracks worldwide with over 40 million copies sold. The album stayed atop the Billboard charts for 24 straight weeks from January to July 1978 and remained on the charts for 120 weeks until March 1980.
Composed and performed primarily by the Bee Gees, the soundtrack features hits including "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," and "How Deep Is Your Love," all of which reached number one in the United States. Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You" also topped the charts. The Bee Gees wrote the songs "virtually in a single weekend" at Château d'Hérouville studio in France, having no concept of the film beyond a rough script. Additional music was composed by David Shire, with tracks like "Manhattan Skyline" and "Night on Disco Mountain" included on the album.
Saturday Night Fever won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, the only disco album to receive that honor. The album was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2012 for being "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant." It was certified 16× Platinum in the United States and ranked number 163 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
