A delightful and majestic reckoning with the ascent of American fiction in the twentieth century through the prism of the under-known man who had an astonishing amount to do with it
Malcolm Cowley is not a household name today, but the American literary canon would look very different without him. A prototypical “man of letters” of his generation—Harvard University, a volunteer in the French ambulance corps in World War I, a rite of passage in Paris after the war—he became one of the few truly influential critics of the 1920s and ’30s, along with his close New Republic colleague Edmund Wilson. Cowley’s early support of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and their set—and indeed for framing this group in generational terms in the first place—secured his place in literary history.
Most people are lucky to be part of a single game-changing era in their careers; for Cowley, it happened again and again. After emerging from the political fray of the thirties badly damaged, he retreated behind the scenes as a tastemaker whose import has awaited Gerald Howard to be brought into full view. The process of canon formation is a murky business, and Cowley was a prime mover in it for the better part of four decades, through the Lost Generation, the Beat Generation, and the counterculture of the sixties. Without him, the odds would be much longer that the names William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac, and Ken Kesey, to name just three, would have ever echoed.
In The Insider, Gerald Howard gives an intimate accounting of the fever graph of a fascinating and multifaceted career in the literary trade that uses that career to tell a much bigger story of how American literature took the course that it did from the 1920s to the 1960s. It’s a story of an art form, and an industry, and a country experiencing wrenching change, and the people who made a home in the storm and in no small part shaped it. Howard’s own career as a literary weathermaker is justly acclaimed, and he has brought all his talents of head and heart to bear in crafting this extraordinary book. It’s a gift to booklovers and a major contribution to the cultural history of this country.

Good for Chewers
Theme: Football, Size: Large
Dogs love it, they been chewing on it and it's like new. Also I put treats inside and they really like that. I have a small pit mix and a puppy shepherd husky mutt. They play tug of war with it and it's holding up really good.

Great inside toy
Theme: Football, Size: Large
Our Rottie loves these! I wanted something like the Jolly Ball but that is soft for inside the house. She's had a lot of fun with this, picking it up, tossing it, playing soccer, etc.

A BIG hit with my BIG dog!
Theme: Football, Size: Large
My Great Dane/Boxer mix LOVES this toy. She is over 100 lbs and very strong. She got a hold of my son's real football last year and after she made the initial holes and deflated it we just let her have it. She completely ripped it to shreds in about 7 months but had such a blast tossing it around and galloping around the yard with it, I knew I had to replace it with something of the same shape but hopefully more durable. This is it! She really adores this. We play catch and tug with it and it seems like it's going to last a really long time. The rubber is flexible but strong. I'll try to get a picture of her with it and load it. I highly recommend this toy. We ordered the Large size, by the way. :-)
2-6-2015 - Update: I am just now ordering a new one. For nearly 4 years, the old one has been kept outside in the rain, sun, snow, and ice. She still loves to grab it, shake it, throw it up in the air and play tug with whenever she's outside. The rubber is just now starting to crack so it's time for a new one.

Holding up very well, favorite
Theme: Football, Size: Large, Theme: Football, Size: Large
A few weeks ago I ordered three dog toys for my dogs. I have a German shepherd, Lab mix and a medium mix. The latter boy is the biggest destroyer in our family, he chewed pieces of a black Kong.
I did not really have high hopes for this football shaped toy with holes, but it is holding up beyond my expectations. You can see some teeth marks, but they are not chewing it up (yet?). They love to play tug with this, kick it around by themselves, or lie down with it and chew on it. I like it because it is a soft rubber and doesn't make so much noise when they throw it around on my hard flooring. For the price, they are definitely getting a whole lot of fun out of it.
Edit: Now, more than a month later, my dog managed to get a small piece off after a heavy chew session. After that first piece apparently it is easy to get more off, and he wants to swallow it so the ball is in the trash.
