Men from Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maine were ordered to hold it. Approaching the Blue line on the crest of the hill, the Confederates were thrown back by the first Union volley. They were staggered but they did not stop. The desperate fighting lasted until nightfall but the Federals retained the field.
