“In a feat of razor-sharp journalism, Zimberoff asks all the right questions about Silicon Valley’s hunger for a tech-driven food system. If you, like me, suspect they’re selling the sizzle more than the steak, read Technically Food for the real story.” —Dan Barber, the chef and co-owner of Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns

Eating a veggie burger used to mean consuming a mushy, flavorless patty that you would never confuse with a beef burger. But now products from companies like Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods, Eat Just, and others that were once fringe players in the food space are dominating the media, menus in restaurants, and the refrigerated sections of our grocery stores. With the help of scientists working in futuristic labs––making milk without cows and eggs without chickens––start-ups are creating wholly new food categories. Real food is being replaced by high-tech.

Technically Food: Inside Silicon Valley’s Mission to Change What We Eat by investigative reporter Larissa Zimberoff is the first comprehensive survey of the food companies at the forefront of this booming business. Zimberoff pokes holes in the mania behind today’s changing food landscape to uncover the origins of these mysterious foods and demystify them. These sometimes ultraprocessed and secretly produced foods are cheered by consumers and investors because many are plant-based—often vegan—and help address societal issues like climate change, animal rights, and our planet’s dwindling natural resources. But are these products good for our personal health?

Through news-breaking revelations, Technically Food examines the trade-offs of replacing real food with technology-driven approximations. Chapters go into detail about algae, fungi, pea protein, cultured milk and eggs, upcycled foods, plant-based burgers, vertical farms, cultured meat, and marketing methods. In the final chapter Zimberoff talks to industry voices––including Dan Barber, Mark Cuban, Marion Nestle, and Paul Shapiro––to learn where they see food in 20 years.

As our food system leaps ahead to a sterilized lab of the future, we think we know more about our food than we ever did. But because so much is happening so rapidly, we actually know less about the food we are eating. Until now.

Durable, fun, and good for aggressive chewers
Color: grass-green
I have bought this toy for my dog twice now, and the first time I purchased it, it quickly became his favorite. Unfortunately, I lost the first one when some other dogs took it down the street while we were playing outside. It was a bit heartbreaking to lose it, but after about two weeks, we managed to find the old one. However, it was in the middle of the street and had been run over several times, resulting in a broken squeaker. Despite its rough condition, it was clear how much my dog loved that toy. When I bought the new one, I was relieved to see that he doesn’t let it out of his sight at all. We have so much fun together, playing with it by throwing it in lakes, sandy areas, and engaging with other dogs. Even after all this rough play, the new toy is still intact. My dog particularly enjoys the squeaker feature, which adds to his excitement during playtime. He is an aggressive chewer, but this toy has proven to be more durable and has lasted us much longer than most of the other toys we've tried. It has definitely become a staple in our playtime routine!

Great product
Color: grass-green
This is my dogs' new favorite chew toy. They chew them all the time and have held up way better than most other chew toys.

Nope, not for Murphy the alligator hunter! 🐊🙄
Color: grass-green, Color: grass-green
Murphy, our 75 pound lab, loves to chew. We can’t give him anything soft or even anything remotely made for casual play as he chews them to pieces- literally. So when I saw this cute little alligator, with fairly good reviews, I bought it with high expectations. Nope. It didn’t have a chance- It’s in the garbage. ☹️ First I have to comment on the eyes. I don’t know what they are made of, but the “whites” of the eyes pealed off like paint within the first few minutes Murphy had it. He wasn’t even chewing at the eyes; they just pealed off. I can’t imagine that is good for dogs to ingest, but ok, I threw the white pieces away, and gave it back to him. I do have to say that he loved chewing on it- even without adding any kind of treat to it. So we watched him chew at it for about 30-40 minutes without it being dissected into a million different parts. I was impressed.... Until I took it away from him to be played with later.... during this time he was able to tear parts of the mouth (see pictures), and while all pieces are still in tact, I cannot imagine another 30 minutes of him having this in one piece. So, while I’m very aware that Murphy has limited toys to chew on, I will continue my search for indestructible toys for his chewing pleasure.

Cute toy maybe not for aggressive chewers
Color: grass-green
I bought this because I have an 3 1/2 yr old golden doodle. She tears every toy apart within half hour of having it. The only toys she hasn’t is Kong toys. This is a cute toy. She was shredding pieces off the rubber with half hour of chewing it:( I thought it was very similar to the material of Kong toys? She loves chewing it and playing with it but I probably would not buy it for really aggressive large dogs who tear up toys.
