Speak No Evil is the sixth album by saxophonist Wayne Shorter, released in June 1966 on Blue Note Records. Recorded on Christmas Eve in 1964 during Shorter’s first year with Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet, the album features a powerhouse lineup: Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Blending hard bop with modal jazz, the session reflects Shorter’s distinctive compositional voice, marked by elliptical melodies and striking harmonic movement.
The album is widely considered one of Shorter’s masterpieces and a cornerstone of the Blue Note catalogue. Critics and musicians alike have lauded it for both its compositional depth and improvisational interplay. The Penguin Guide to Jazz included Speak No Evil in its “Core Collection,” calling it Shorter’s most satisfying record. In Jazz: A Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings, Ben Ratliff noted the album’s lasting influence, writing that it introduced “a gnomic compositional style that would haunt jazz forevermore.”
The cover features a photograph of Shorter’s first wife, Teruko (Irene) Nakagami. Over the decades, Speak No Evil has come to represent not just a high point in Shorter’s career, but a defining moment in 1960s jazz.
