Protect critical electrical systems with Eaton’s Type 1 Surge Protective Device (SPD), UL1449 3rd Edition listed for the highest standard of surge protection and safety. Type 1 SPDs are permanently connected devices designed to be installed before or after a main disconnect, providing robust defense at the service entrance against severe surges that can originate from lightning, utility switching, or other transient events. This level of protection helps minimize downtime, shield sensitive equipment, and extend the life of electrical infrastructure in commercial, industrial, and data-driven environments. When you deploy an Eaton Type 1 SPD, you’re choosing a reliable, code-compliant solution that prioritizes safety, performance, and long-term protection for your most valuable assets.

  • Maximal service entrance protection: The Type 1 SPD is engineered to absorb and divert high-energy surges at the source, safeguarding main distribution panels, motors, controllers, and critical loads from direct lightning strikes and large transient events. Its permanent, pre- or post-main disconnect installation ensures protection remains in place during power transitions and routine maintenance, delivering continuous defense for essential systems and processes.
  • Durable, safety-focused design: Built to withstand demanding installation environments, Eaton’s Type 1 SPD features a rugged, purpose-built enclosure and robust internal components. The design emphasizes thermal and mechanical resilience, with clear status indicators and straightforward field serviceability so technicians can quickly assess protection health and perform replacements without unnecessary downtime.
  • UL 1449 3rd Edition listed: This product adheres to the latest safety and performance standards for surge protection devices. UL 1449 3rd Edition listing provides documented surge handling capabilities, improved fault protection, and validated performance, helping to reduce the risk of fire and equipment damage in the event of a surge.
  • Ease of replacement and ongoing reliability: Type 1 SPDs are designed for straightforward maintenance and replacement, enabling quick service after surge events. A modular approach to protection allows technicians to swap protective elements with minimal disruption to the broader electrical system, preserving uptime for critical operations.
  • Seamless portfolio integration: As part of Eaton’s protection ecosystem, Type 1 SPDs are designed for compatibility with Eaton’s distribution panels and protection solutions. The device can serve as a direct replacement for aging protectors and can be integrated with existing protection strategies to create a cohesive, future-proof power protection plan.

How to install Eaton Type 1 Surge Protective Device

  • Prepare the workspace: Before any installation, power down the service and apply lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the system is fully de-energized. Verify there is no residual voltage and follow all local electrical codes and safety guidelines.
  • Choose the mounting location: Install the Type 1 SPD at the service entrance or immediately adjacent to the main disconnect as specified by the manufacturer and applicable codes. Ensure adequate clearance for maintenance, proper ventilation, and labeling for future servicing.
  • Identify line and load connections: Confirm terminal labeling and wiring designations (line vs. load) on the device. Use appropriately rated conductors and maintain separation from other wiring to minimize interference and allow for safe grounding and bonding.
  • Make secure electrical connections: Connect the service conductors to the designated line terminals and route protected load circuits through the load terminals according to the product documentation. Use proper torque values and approved termination methods, ensuring all connections are tight and free of corrosion or strain.
  • Grounding, bonding, and verification: Ensure the SPD is properly grounded and bonded to the electrical system per code requirements. After installation, perform a functional check to verify that the protection device is properly seated, indicators (if present) show normal operation, and there are no abnormal heating signs or loose components.
  • Documentation and commissioning: Record the installation details, including model, rating, and location in the facility’s power protection plan. If required, coordinate with electrical inspection authorities to validate compliance and complete any required commissioning tests.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a Type 1 Surge Protective Device?
A Type 1 SPD is a permanently connected surge protector designed to be installed at the service entrance or immediately after the main disconnect. It provides primary protection against high-energy surges entering the electrical system, helping to shield equipment and reduce downtime.
  • Why is UL 1449 3rd Edition important?
UL 1449 3rd Edition listing confirms that the device meets the latest safety and performance criteria for surge protection. This standard reflects improvements in surge rating, fault protection, and reliability, giving installers and owners confidence in safety and effectiveness.
  • Where should I install Eaton Type 1 SPD?
Typically at the service entrance or connected immediately after the main disconnect within the service equipment. This positioning ensures the highest energy surge events are intercepted before they reach downstream circuits and sensitive equipment.
  • Can I replace an older surge protector with an Eaton Type 1 SPD?
Yes, when upgrading, confirm compatibility with your panel, wiring, and bus rating. Upgrading to a Type 1 SPD can enhance protection levels and align with current safety standards.
  • Does this device protect data lines or only power circuits?
Type 1 SPDs primarily protect power distribution circuits. For data lines or communication networks, consider additional protection devices designed for telecom and data circuits to ensure comprehensive safeguarding across all systems.

Accurate and easy to use
Size: 3 kg - Normal Size, Size: 3 kg - Normal Size
At the moment, I can't think of anything I dislike about this scale. The buttons are responsive, the measurements are accurate (I checked the readings with a couple of calibration weights from a scientific scale), the displays are clear. Operation in daily use is very simple. 1. Turn on scale 2. After self test, place carafe and filter 3. Press "T" to tare 4. Add grinds 5. Press "||>" to weigh the grinds. This automatically tares the scale again and sets the timer to standby. It also activates the coffee to water ratio display 6. Add water and the timer automatically starts so you get a precise bloom time. The added water is weighed and displayed as you pour and the coffee to water ratio display gives you an instantaneous reading, so you can brew your perfect cup of coffee each time. The scale has a large capacity and precise resolution so it works for single small cups to large pots. All in all, the best scale I've tried so far and might pick up another one when they go on sale (again). Highly recommended.
