artist biography
Emil Jensen was born on April 20, 1905 in Norresundby. He was a Danish artist.
Jensen didn’t grow up in an artistic environment. His father was a farmer and Jensen didn’t study art at school, initially working as a blacksmith and then farrier. It wasn’t until 1945 that he began painting.
He made his debut at the Kunstnernes Efterärsudstilling exhibition in 1949 and subsequently exhibited in this annual exhibition numerous times. He exhibited his work primarily at galleries in Denmark. He was a member of the artist organisation Vrå-udstillingen from 1948, and regularly exhibited with them.
He received art grants from the Danish Kulturministeriet (Ministry of Culture) and from Ole Haslunds Kunstnerfond.
Jensen is best known were scenes from his hometown of Brønderslev such as industrial buildings and the viaducts under the railway, and the flat landscape of nearby Store Vildmose. His wife Kamma Marie is often seen as a stylised figure in the paintings. His constructivist flat based painting were often executed in a palette of blue and green. He primarily worked in oil paint, but did also also produce drawings in pencil and pastel.
The book Maleren Emil Jensen (The Painter Emil Jensen) was published in 1967 by Nordisk Litteratur Forlag. Other notable literature include features in Le Revue Modern (Paris, 1952), Malere i Vendsyssel (Kaj Norgaard and H. P. Jensen, 1957), and the magazine Kunst (January, 1958).
Jensen passed away in 1973.
