So all of which are commonly available in surface water. You can use them in a variety of services including: for example; industrial, municipal, and institutional applications. As a result, commercial media filter tank materials are stainless steel 304, 316, carbon steel and FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic).
Which filter media types can one use in filter media tank?
- Activated carbon medium: to remove taste, odor, organic contaminants, and chlorine as well as being used in many drinking water applications in commercial water media filtration systems.
- Sand is the most common filter media. Generally, fine mesh sand with a coarse grain supports bed to remove suspended solids and turbidity.
- Gravel has a highly spherical shape that promotes good flow and even distribution in support beds accordingly.
- Anthracite is as a filter medium where additional silica in the water is not desirable and can remove lighter weight turbidity. So, we use anthrcite in commercial water filtration systems where silica pick-up is undesirable accordingly.
- Calcite media is specially a calcium carbonate compound for neutralizing acid with consistent dissolving rates for water treatment accordingly.
- Manganese Greensand media: siliceous material coats them for treating water containing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide through oxidation.
- You need multimedia when you require maximum quality water and unwanted sediment is too small to be removed by standard media. So, it consists of multiple layers of increasing grain size to remove sediment as small as 10 microns.

Can we backwash or clean media in commercial water media filtration systems?
When the commercial water media filtration systems begin to clog or when the head loss (pressure drop) through the bed increases, reduces flow rates. To prevent degradation of water quality, the flow is reversed consequently. Hence, control valves direct it to drain, carrying with it, the particulate matter that has built up during service. So, the required flow is specific to the media and is essential to proper cleaning of the media bed. For media filters, the backwash flow is always higher than the service flow rate.
