The Portuguese guitar is a kind of weird instrument. It has a teardrop shaped body, twelve strings, an odd tuning scheme, and is generally associated with the mournful Portuguese musical style called fado. It's not often used as an improv instrument, especially in avant-garde settings, but that was before Victor Herrero got his hands on one. Probably best known for his work with Josephine Foster, Victor is a Spanish guitarist and composer, whose work ranges from very traditional to beyond contemporary. On a trip to Lisbon a decade or so ago, he and Ms. Foster became enthralled by the glittering tone qualities of the Portuguese guitar, and decided to go halves on one. A lot of wood-shedding and investigating various musical forms ensued, as the guitar traveled around Spain and then the rest of the world with the pair. It was used as part of a show with Keiji Haino in Japan. It figured into a recording session with some of the Master Musicians Of Jojouka. It was noted performing duets with saxophonist Sonny Simmons. And so on. Removed from it's parochial context, the instrument showed itself to be an incredibly limber and adaptable axe. Astrolabio is an album of solo compositions and improvisations for Portuguese guitar that defies easy classification. It's tone is so bright and folky it almost sounds like a hammered dulcimer in spots, but Jean Ritchie would probably keel over if she heard this record. At times, Victor's playing emphasizes the ethereal beauty of the strings' natural vibrations, but he can also create insane rafts of sound with Northern African rhythms crossing swords with chunks of string sound as mysteriously fried as anything ever done by Loren Connors. Totally boss, and unlike anything we've ever heard before. Prepare thyself to deal

Fun for Pups and You Can Hide a Treat Inside!
These chew toys are fun for my pup! He especially loves that I can hide a treat inside, which keeps him interested and entertained. They’re a nice size for small dogs and puppies, and I also like the light colors because they’re easy to spot when they end up under the sofa because somehow they always do!

Cute toys but not for tough chewers. Might be too thick for my 6 lb girl
These are fun for the right dog, but not a good choice for all. They're a good size for medium dogs and some small dogs, but "small" is relative I guess and the size of this toy won't work for all small dogs. I definitely expected these to be smaller, though I measured and they are the size shown in the listing (for those in the US it's about 2 1/4" by 4 3/4"). I think one thing that surprised me is how tall (?) they are, or maybe thick? They show two measurements in the listing but not the other. That's the one that makes a big difference with small dogs, especially really small dogs like mine. I have a 6 lb Maltese with a teeny tiny mouth so I have to find toys that she can fit her teeny mouth around. She loves toys with nubbies and has other "spiky" toys like this, but so far hasn't been too interested and I wonder if it's because it's too thick. If she doesn't give them a try we have doggy friends who are big enough for them, more the 12-16 lb size. There was a bit of smell on them when I first opened the package, but after giving them a quick wash (which I do with all chew toys like this) the smell was completely gone. Whatever it was must have just been on the outside because it hasn't come back. I can't really say how durable these are, but I doubt they'd be good for tough chewers. They're not super soft but in the world of dog chewing they're medium at best. They're very cute and if you have a medium to soft chewer they could be a great addition to the toy basket. They also have a hole down the middle which could be filled with something to lick out, another way to keep them busy. Can't say any of this makes them worth the rather high price asked though.
