In this gossipy, name-filled and lavishly illustrated volume, Allen Churchill chronicles the families, fads, and fortunes that made New York, New York what it was. From the days of the English governors--one of whom used to wear his wife's dresses to underscore his resemblance to Queen Anne--New York's High Society has been an inexhaustible fount of glamour and fascination. Included in this impertinent potpourri are the mansions of Millionaire's Row (one, on the corner of Fifty-second Street, cost three million [1880s] dollars); the "Bouncers" and "Shoddies" who assaulted Gotham Society with cash as their sole weapon; the origin of "The Four Hundred", how Manhattan reacted to two Princes of Wales; The Bradley Martin Ball, which nearly started a riot; the Vanderbilt-Marlborough wedding which was denounced by the press, and much, much more. In every era, Churchill examines the awesome and often eccentric personalities that made Manhattan's blood run blue: James Cordon Bennett, who was horsewhipped by his fiancée's brother and had to leave the country; "Commodore" Vanderbilt, the first of the great dynasty founders; Caroline Astor (THE Mrs. Astor); the rapacious Jay Gould; Ward McAllister, whose decline from social grace brought the public's scorn down on an entire era of brittle, gilded life. Finally, Churchill examines the rush for the celebrity-ridden wilds of Café Society that "killed" High Society, and details some of its more astonishing death-throes. But even if Society is dead, this book--always informative, often hilarious, usually indiscreet, and illustrated with over two hundred old prints and photographs--should stand as its definitive epitaph.

Pretty Nice

I’m not sure why the promotional photos show these hooks with the bent ends pointing down. To me that makes no sense, as it seems they are using them upside down. It makes more sense to me to have the bent ends point up, so the items being stored do not slide off. Additionally, the shorter bent hooks make no sent to have on the top, as they would limit how far back you could place a shovel or other tool. When using the hooks with the bent ends pointing up, you can place your lighter bulkier items on the long hooks, but then use the short hooks for those heavier items (if they fit), as that gets them closer to the magnets and will have less leverage to make the magnetic hooks fall free from the metal they are trying to be attracted to. In my example photos, you can see how the shorter hooks do not obstruct the shovels and other tools from being stored properly and the bent ends then also help to prevent the tools from sliding off the hook. Overall, I am very happy with the hooks. I’ve had a fondness for magnets since I was a kid, so I have a very realistic expectation of the limits of magnets and these magnetic hooks perform as well as I would expect.

Strong magnetic hook with only one small con
Color: E-Blackpro 4
I got the four-pack of magnetic hooks and the magnets are indeed strong. You have to reasonable with how much weight you hang off of these though! The longer hooks help with holding multiple items. I've used them for shovels and rakes and they hold up just fine. The only slight con is that I wish the ends of the hooks curled up instead of down to keep items from sliding off as safety precaution. You can just turn the hook upside down but then the shorter hooks are at the bottom. They work for what I need them and can hold power tools as well. The hooks are sturdy and the magnet power is impressive.

Magnets are strong
Color: E-Blackpro 4
Arrived fast. Magnets are really strong on my husbands metal peg board in the garage outside. The only draw back, the rings are slightly long for a work bench area. Wish they were 3-4''.

Happy with them
I'm putting up shelves around my bed for my books, and so far, the first shelf is holding nicely with these brackets. They seem pretty sturdy and were easy to install with the screws and anchors that came with it. I measured out where i wanted the brackets on the board and then screwed them to it. I then held it against the wall and used a level to make sure it was level, then put a screw in the middle bracket to hold it level while i marked the rest of the screw holes. I did this all by myself, but it would've been a lot easier to do with two people. I plan to buy more and put up more shelves
