The Great War broke out on August 4th, 1914, impacting the lives of millions around the world. Many people thought Ñ or hoped Ñ that the War would be short. One of the young men who entered the fighting that onth, and who served until his death in March 1918, was twenty-five year old William George Gabain M.C.

Known to family to this day, as ÒUncle Willie,Ó he lost his life early in GermanyÕs last offensive, Operation Michael, in March 1918, and is buried in the British cemetery at Pargny, France by the Somme Canal.

Gabain was born in Le Havre. He traveled and studied in Germany and also read German language at Cambridge. Because of this background and fluency in French and German, he was valued as an intelligence officer. In 1915, he operated a train watching service in German occupied Belgium. In France he spent his time at GHQ, served in the 1916 Battle of the Somme and at Ypres in Belgium. He questioned prisoners, studied the terrain, flew over the trenches, translated captured documents and letters, listened to German wireless communications, and reported to GHQ and General Haig. His best friend was his Triumph motorcycle.

He was educated at Sandroyd, Charterhouse and CambridgeÕs Pembroke College. He loved sports, especially boxing. He was survived by his parents, Charles Edward Gabain and Elizabeth Hutton Gabain, and his sisters Marjorie, Dorothy, Ruth, Nora, and Ethel. In 1921, his grief stricken mother privately published a book with excerpts from his journals, his letters, her thoughts and feelings, and condolences the family received from people who knew and served with him.

His story is one of millions of men and their families who suffered and lost so much in The Great War.

Don’t buy for restaurant industry
Size: 10.5, Color: Black, Size: 10.5, Color: Black
Good looking shoes, fairly comfortable and good value based on the description shared, so I don’t feel it’s fair to rate them lower than 4 stars. I had high hopes for them based on previous reviews from others saying they wore them in the food and beverage industry that mentioned their quality and durability, however I strongly recommend looking elsewhere if you do. I purchased these to wear working in a full service upscale restaurant and in less than two months have managed to have torn the material on the middle exterior section and the bottoms of the shoes are already completely worn down. Good design, but the durability needs to be improved if they’re to hold up for that industry.

DO NOT BUY (lasted less than 7 months)
Size: 11, Color: Black, Size: 11, Color: Black
I bought these for work as a bartender in August of 2025. By December, the tops were scuffed, frayed, and peeling beyond repair, and by February, the soles were coming off. I’ve never had a pair of shoes with such low quality.

Most comfortable shoes, right out of the box!
Size: 8.5, Color: Cognac Napa Leather
Oh my! So, my ordering of shoes online has been hit or miss - 1/2 size too big or too small; too wide or not wide enough. Enter these Marc Joseph shoes… such a game changer. They fit like a glove, exceptionally comfortable, and easy to slip in and out of. I like them so much that I am shopping for another pair. So far, the size, quality, fit, feel, look, and comfort make this pair my dedicated first pick. Btw, I have been wearing them for six hours and they are still very comfortable! I highly recommend these shoes.
