Friel began his career in the minor leagues in 1895 and in 1901 he signed on and played with the Milwaukee Brewers. Friel played three seasons of professional baseball as a outfielder, second and third baseman. He remained with the franchise in 1902-1903 after it moved to St. Louis and became the Browns. He played several more years in the minors before becoming a manager.
