The TransportTags Republic P-47D Thunderbolt tag was crafted from gun bay access doors that each cover four of the 8 total .50-caliber machine guns taken from P-47D-28 S/N: 42-28903, a Republic bubble canopy model with combat history. Piloted by Lieutenant J. Howard Baier during the Battle of the Bulge—a critical campaign highlighting the P-47’s resilience and effectiveness in ground attack, our P-47 was attached to the 391st Fighter Squadron and the 366th Fighter Group during World War II.

On February 21, 1945, this particular P-47 was involved in a runway taxiing accident at the Y-29 Airfield in Belgium and was subsequently deemed unsalvageable and struck off charge.

Stripped for parts, its legacy was preserved when we acquired the gun access bay panels from a private collector in Europe. The panels were either taken off during routine maintenance and replaced before the taxiing accident or most likely, stripped off the plane after it was deemed unsalvageable due to the accident. Initially, the locals of the airfield were using the panels as roofing for sheds and outhouses and the panels subsequently traded hands within Europe before we brought them back to the U.S. We repurposed them in 2025 in order to continue this legendary “Jugs” story.
