Floating Density Ball:

A hollow metal sphere that floats in cool water and sinks in warm water — making the abstract concept of thermal density change immediately visible and memorable. The ball's density is precisely calibrated to sit at the boundary: cold water is dense enough to support it; warm water, less so. A simple, powerful demonstration requiring minimal setup.

How to run the demonstration:

  • Fill one 1000 ml beaker with cold water (ice water or refrigerated) and one with tap water at room temperature
  • Record the temperature of each beaker using a thermometer before placing the ball
  • Place the density ball in the cold water — observe it floating at the surface
  • Transfer the ball directly to the warm water — observe it sinking
  • Discuss how the same ball behaves differently due to the change in water density caused by temperature
  • Extend the experiment by gradually warming the cold water and recording the temperature at which the ball transitions from floating to sinking

Warm water

Floats Higher density

Cool water is denser. Buoyant force exceeds the ball's weight — it rises to the surface.

Sinks Lower density

Warm water expands and becomes less dense. Buoyant force is insufficient — the ball sinks.

Instructions

Included

Suitable for primary and secondary science classrooms, this apparatus supports curriculum outcomes around density, buoyancy, the particle model of matter, and the thermal properties of water. The demonstration can also prompt discussion of real-world phenomena such as ocean thermal stratification, the water cycle, and why ice floats.

Not for the weak...
Color: 1 pk
A bit tough to use. My blend has green peppercorns in it. The mill does dispense a finely ground powder but it takes some significant wrist action. I don't love this item which I find VERY "manual" though quieter than any motorized version. I wouldn't buy it again.

Nice grinders for the price
Model: 2 Pack Salt and Pepper Grinder
The grinders are working fine, though I have only used them for a couple of days. Their size is a little smaller than I would like for in kitchen cooking, but I got them knowing they will work better in a planned move with a smaller kitchen. Good size for a table. I'm happy with the clean, simple appearance and the quality so far. Just ordered a second set for white and mixed color peppercorns and will donate the sort of hodge podge assortment of grinders I currently use.

Love them
Model: 2 Pack Salt and Pepper Grinder
Love those. Good quality material and work very nicely. I like that I could set the size of the ground salt and pepper by myself, this was very useful.
