"A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, My Life in Art begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelman's childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart café with the help of a famous restaurateur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that Mr. Bemelmans suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of a painting in oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings is "about how and why and where they were painted," says Mr. Bemelmans."
