Their descendants intermarried, each generation halving the number of families until by the beginning of the twentieth century our narrative focuses on Anne Jones Price (1856-1923), the wife of John Barton Paxton. The book describes events in the areas from which the families came and the rise of their radical Quaker faith. It tells about settling in a new country, war for independence, the rise of market capitalism, reform movements, a passion for natural history, and increasing class differences in the Gilded Age.
