A Los Angeles Times's and Southern California Indie Bookseller Association's Bestseller

Los Angeles Stories is a collection of loosely linked, noir-ish tales that evoke a bygone era in one of America's most iconic cities. In post-World War II Los Angeles, as power was concentrating and fortunes were being made, a do-it-yourself culture of cool cats, outsiders, and oddballs populated the old downtown neighborhoods of Bunker Hill and Chavez Ravine. Ordinary working folks rubbed elbows with petty criminals, grifters, and all sorts of women at foggy end-of-the-line outposts in Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

Rich with the essence and character of the times, suffused with the patois of the city's underclass, these are stories about the common people of Los Angeles, "a sunny place for shady people," and the strange things that happen to them. Musicians, gun shop owners, streetwalkers, tailors, door-to-door salesmen, drifters, housewives, dentists, pornographers, new arrivals, and hard-bitten denizens all intersect in cleverly plotted stories that center around some kind of shadowy activity. This quirky love letter to a lost way of life will appeal to fans of hard-boiled fiction and anyone interested in the city itself.

"Taken as a whole, this collection offers a panoramic view of a rapidly changing Los Angeles and its immigrant communities, rich in period detail and idiomatic dialogue, sometimes based on Cooder's own memories of growing up in the same neighborhoods in which the stories are often set."--Uncut Magazine

"Cooder shouldn't stop making records. He should keep writing, too." --Rolling Stones

"The stories of Ry Cooder are a lot like his music: stately, precise, well constructed; they grab you by the throat, quietly, and never let go ... "--Andrew J. Khaled Madigan, The Iowa Review

"The strict Los Angeles setting--the city's highs and lows romanticised ceaselessly--make them like Raymond Chandler or Mickey Spillane."--Chris Johnston, Sydney Morning Herald

"In Los Angeles Stories, his first published collection of stories, Cooder pays homage to the jazz, the blues and the Latin beat of a bygone era. He also honors a cast of boisterous musicians, some murdered, others spared to tell their gritty tales of life and death. A few famous musicians--John Lee Hooker and Charlie Parker among them--make cameo appearances in these pages, but most of the guitar players, drummers and lounge singers are as unknown as the repossession men, waitresses and mechanics they entertain in forgotten bars and derelict nightclubs."--San Francisco Chronicle

Ry Cooder is a world-famous guitarist, singer, and composer known for his slide guitar work, interest in roots music, and more recently for his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries, including The Buena Vista Social Club. He has composed soundtracks for more than twenty films, including Paris, Texas. Two recent albums were accompanied by stories Cooder wrote to accompany the music. This is his first published collection of stories.

Works as intended
I've been into emulators lately and this is a great HDMI out with charging capabilities to go with your high speed charging brick. Doesn't work for everything, but I can attest it works with the AYN Thor and a Google Pixel 8 Pro, and presumably higher end Pixels. Both have emulators and both come thru my TV just fine. Also works with Kodi. I tried to use wired controllers, but quickly figured I'm better off going Bluetooth on that route. I haven't tried file transfer or anything because all that mattered to me was getting it to the big screen. I'd rather have a docking stand for my needs, but freedom and flexibility isn't a bad thing for this device at a decent price and cheaper than a dock.

Versatile hub adds the ports my Mac lacks
This 7-in-1 USB C hub from Anker has made it easy to connect my laptop to all the devices I need. The HDMI port consistently outputs 4K video at 60Hz, while the USB 3.0 ports and SD/microSD slots transfer files quickly without errors. I appreciate that the pass-through charging allows me to power my MacBook while using the hub, and the unit itself feels solid and well made. It's truly plug-and-play, with no drivers to install, and it greatly expands the limited port selection on modern laptops. The only minor drawback is that the hub can get a little warm under heavy use, but overall it's a reliable, convenient accessory that I feel confident recommending.

Awesome USB-C Hub
My new MacBook Air has USB-C ports only, so I recently upgraded to this USB-C hub, a 7in1 Multi-Port USB-C Adapter, and it has completely solved all of my port needs. With the two USB-A ports, I can still use my old memory sticks, without replacing them, as well as two USB-C ports, all making moving files, movies and pictures, with ease. I needed something fast and reliability, and this little device delivers on both fronts. One of the USB-C ports it a power passthrough, which works great for charging device, like my MacBook Air. It is very easy to use, just plug and play, making it compatible with the MacBook Air. Also has a built in card reader, and a HDMI port, pretty much covering all your port needs. If you are looking for a well built, reliable, fast, and compact USB-C hub that can everything, this is the one to get. Highly recommended!

Good value and best of all - it works
This did the job I wanted it to. Expanded the ports when my laptop just ran out. No delay or ANY issue no matter what I plugged where and after a little figuring out where things went (not difficult) its performing very well. As far as value, its great. I always evaluate something by if I would purchase it again. Yes I would. if you need it, get it and set it up and move on with less worry about port capacity.

Good Multipurpose Hub, Some Limits on Power Draw
I use this with a Dell Latitude 7430 with a 65W charger, and it works fine as a docking hub. The only problem I've encountered is when rebooting, the boot will pause with a warning message to tell me that the laptop may encounter reduced performance because it isn't able to receive the full 65 watts. I don't get that warning if I'm not running the power supply through the hub. Otherwise, if I just use the hub as a port extender everything is fine. It has a compact design and is reasonably lightweight. It would be ideal for travel. Like my other Anker hubs, it's well constructed and doesn't feel cheap although it's good value for money.
