While not native to Hawai'i, the tree was brought here in 1929 from its native homelands of the Philippines to assist in combating soil erosion. Unfortunately, they are quite the thirsty plant and tend to remove a lot of water from the surrounding Hawaiian rain forest soil. Because of this, we have bitter/sweet feelings for this tree. At the very least, it does beautify our islands with its almost hand-painted bark effect, so why not allow it to beautify our merchandise as well?
