Diary of the Last Man is a fictional diary written by a nameless ‘patient’ who is undergoing compulsory experimental trials aimed at discovering a vaccine to combat a virus, known as the Omega Strain, which is quickly decimating the entire planet.

Kept in isolation and under surveillance, he is permitted to make the diary entries in the hope that they may shed light on the cerebral effects of the experimental ‘medication’ to which he is subjected. He suffers repeated hallucinatory and dreamlike states as he oscillates between despair and hope in what appears to be an endless contest between the two.

Believing himself to be hiding in the basement of his own home, loneliness and isolation take a heavy toll on his mental health, a cerebral decline made significantly worse by the experimental drugs administered by operatives who believe that science holds the key to preserving the last remaining vestiges of human civilization and that this end justifies the means taken to achieve it.

It is for you to decide whether, for the ‘patient’, hope finally falls victim to despair or whether it emerges triumphant over despondency.

About the Author

P R Brown studied Philosophy at University College, Swansea, and gained his doctorate at St John’s College, Cambridge.  He is the author of several books, both fiction and non-fiction, each title dealing with issues of current and profound socio-cultural importance.  His motivation to write stems from his persistent belief that one essential genre of literature, still he hopes extant, must concern itself with the unpopular activity of critical thinking and appraisal.

and I found two cases that were no longer good law (even though this is the new edition)
This is a required text for Internet Law classes. It is edited very poorly. There are typos on every other page, and I found two cases that were no longer good law (even though this is the new edition).

Bad book for SOA exam, but oh well.
Format: Paperback
While required by Society of Actuaries as the textbook for Short Term Actuarial Models exam, I could not recommend this textbook for any other purposes. Written by two Canadian actuaries, a lot of terms and explanations used in this textbook cannot be transferred into US P&C insurance. It fails to explains insurance's purpose and products effectively and as an intro book with unnecessary sentences to deliver personal thoughts. It is also a mess in following sections on ratemaking and reserving. I cannot sense a flow from this book that guides readers in an approachable manner. Overall, author compromises the size AND the quality.
