Blackmagic Design PYXIS 12K PL

The Blackmagic Design PYXIS 12K PL is a high-end digital cinema camera that combines the versatile, "box-style" modular design of the PYXIS platform with the world-class 12K Large Format (LF) sensor. This version features a native PL mount, making it compatible with professional cinema glass from manufacturers like Arri, Cooke, and Zeiss.

12K Large Format Sensor Technology

The heart of the PYXIS 12K is the custom 36 x 24mm RGBW sensor, originally developed for the URSA Cine series.

  • Resolution and Scaling: With a native resolution of 12,288 x 8,192, the sensor is designed for symmetrical scaling. This allows you to shoot in 12K, 8K, or 4K without cropping the sensor, preserving the distinct large-format field of view and depth of field.

  • RGBW Architecture: By incorporating white (clear) pixels into the traditional RGB array, the camera achieves superior color science and an expanded dynamic range, particularly in the highlights and deep shadows.

  • Generation 5 Color Science: Optimized for skin tone reproduction and high-dynamic-range (HDR) workflows, ensuring a cinematic look that matches seamlessly with other high-end Blackmagic cameras.

Professional PL Mount

The native PL Mount (Positive Lock) is the industry standard for high-end cinematography.

  • Structural Integrity: The mount is reinforced to support heavy, large-format cinema lenses without the need for additional lens supports in many configurations.

  • Cooke /i Technology: The mount includes electronic pins to communicate with "intelligent" lenses, allowing the camera to record frame-by-frame metadata such as focal length, aperture, and focus distance directly into the Blackmagic RAW files.

Modular Box Design and Rigging

The PYXIS body is designed to be the "brain" of a highly customizable rig:

  • Versatile Mounting: The sides and top of the camera feature multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting points, allowing for the attachment of handles, cages, and specialized plates like the PYXIS Pro Handle.

  • Internal Media: Features dual CFexpress Type B card slots for high-speed recording, plus a USB-C expansion port for recording directly to high-capacity external SSDs.

  • Integrated Monitoring: Includes a built-in 4-inch high-brightness HDR touchscreen for menu navigation and on-set monitoring.

Advanced Connectivity and Cloud Workflow

Built for the modern production environment, the PYXIS 12K PL includes high-speed data integration:

  • Direct Cloud Upload: The camera can generate H.264 proxies in real-time and upload them to the Blackmagic Cloud via Ethernet or a connected 5G/4G phone. This allows editors to begin working on a timeline while the original 12K footage is still being filmed.

  • Dual Ethernet & 12G-SDI: Features professional 12G-SDI for monitoring on-set and high-speed Ethernet for remote camera control and file management.

  • Standard Power: Utilizes BP-U series batteries, a common industry standard, providing a balance between high-capacity power and a compact footprint.

Operational Benefit

The PYXIS 12K PL bridges the gap between a compact "B-Cam" and a primary "A-Cam" for high-end features. Its box shape makes it ideal for use on gimbals, drones, and car rigs, where the 12K resolution provides immense flexibility for stabilization and reframing in post-production without losing image quality.

Professional Tip

When using the PL mount version, always ensure your lenses are properly "shimmed." Because 12K resolution is incredibly sharp, any minor discrepancy in the flange focal distance (the distance between the lens and the sensor) will be magnified. Using the included shim kit to calibrate the mount ensures that your lens witness marks remain accurate and your focus is sharp across the entire frame.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5

A good read
Format: Kindle
Multiple points of view. 3 Alpha men and an Omega male. She is a Beta in training for a new program placing betas in Alpha/Omega packs. Mila is only doing the program for the money to take care of her dad. She wasn't expecting to fall for a pack but when she sees this packs Omega she is done for. There is just something about him. His Alphas are good looking as well. Too bad she is hiding a secret and their government is acting shady. I liked it and can't wait to see where their story goes.

Slightly repetitive but I did love some things
Format: Kindle
I love this type of story. And omegaverse is one of my all time favorite genres. But there are a few things that pulled me out of my enjoyment while I was reading. It was repetitive at times as well as struggled with telling not showing. So we didn’t always feel like we were experiencing things with the main character. There were also some plot holes but they may still be answered in part 2. Now this isn’t to be said I didn’t enjoy parts of the story. I loved the almost instant love between Mila and Oliver. And how he started changing around her.

delightful read
Format: Kindle
What a delightful read. The characters are awesome, the plot was so good, I loved it. I was intrigued and it kept me wanting more. Told in multiple pov, the book sucks you in and doesn’t let go. I cannot wait to read the next book.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.
