In You Can't Go Home Again, Thomas Wolfe says, "Some things will never change. Some things will always be the same. Lean down your ear upon the earth and listen." C. D. Peterson's Homefront: A Memoir from WWII permits all of us to lean down and listen as daily life unfolds for ordinary people on a New England dairy farm during the 40's. We are introduced to the Peterson family: Douglas, the youngest--about 8 when the story starts and the voice of the author--his mother, Edie, his father, Harry, Uncle Carl, (every inch a Swede), his grandfather Enoch, known as Pop, and his grandmother always called "The Boss" because nothing on the farm escaped her eye. C. D. Peterson offers his reason for capturing the gentle nostalgia of this particular time and place: "... I am among the 'last ones." Born in the 30s, we are the last ones who personally experienced the scarcity of the Depression, the fear and patriotism during World War II, and the exuberance in the brief pretelevision, postwar period when we felt safe and when the middle class was born."

Home Front moves through a tenuous connection of episodes with slender threads of the author's memory--sentimental without being maudlin. Men are joining the Navy, including his own father. Japanese Americans on the west coast are being placed into internment camps. A school classmate claims that a German sub was seen off Cape Cod, and another classmate is absent for days because her father isn't coming home. Douglas hardly notices the slow changes as he matures. What seems to be constant is Hillcrest Farm - his farm. Crops need planting, hay needs cutting, cows need milking; milk needs pasteurizing; bottles need filling, customers need deliveries, and milk men need the kids who run from the truck to doorsteps with the wire baskets holding the clanking bottles.

Such is the daily cycle of a dairy farm. However, the lateral events, the eclectic marginalia of life, are what living is all about: visiting a boy in an iron lung, listening to Edward R. Murrow "on the brown radio with the green tuning eye," finding a better place to fish, awkwardly kissing a girl for the first time, and riding down the river with her on a steel drum raft. It's hard to understand life while you are living it. The sounds of the traffic on the State highway grew louder--a subtle foreboding--as industry and modernization started moving away from Boston toward Hillcrest Farm. Shoppers' World, one of the first malls in America, was being built down the street and General Motors opened a huge assembly plant in town. More people now owned refrigerators and fewer customers of their dairy needed bottles of milk delivered every day. The converse of Wolfe's quote is also true: Some things will change.

Home Front is a blend of two stories. On one hand it is a coming of age account of growing up in a tight knit family on a small farm in a small New England town, with flavors of Tom Sawyer, and on the other hand it is a narrative of how World War II and the post war years impacted the family. It brings home to the reader how like in a small rural town was irrevocably changes by the "progress" in the post war period. Homefront is unforgettable.

C.D. Peterson's writing is commanding without idealizing the essence of the story; he is the master of the mot juste. The book has a complement of family photos and appealing illustrations that capture this time and place. The image of a lone barn cat in the final beat of the story is a masterful literary crescendo. Home Front concludes with an Addendum of Voices from The Home Front WWII. Thirty-eight people share their remembrances of this era in their own words and pictures.

Works prefectly, accurate, easy to use, and looks great.
Color: Black
I didn't expect much but it works really well and seems to be very accurate. It's much more sensitive (to 0.1g) than the scale I was using to measure my coffee and the autostart timer works really well. Also, unlike my other scale, this one is USB-C rechargable and so far has no indication of needing a recharge after a week or so of daily use. My other scale uses CR2032 batteries and goes through a pair every three weeks, so being able to recharge instead is quite nice. It's small and I can use it to time the extraction and also use it to measure out heated water for tea, or whatever I need. This is definitely a steal for the price.

Great value and full-functioned.
Color: Black
This is a simple, elegant little scale with timer. It's perfect for use with a small espresso machine like my Breville Bambino Plus. It shifts easily from counter use weighing beans before grinding, to placing on the drip tray to time and weigh shots. The top is smooth and water resistant. I think it's a great value.

Great scale that needs some improvements to be perfect
Color: White, Color: White
Very accurate scale, looks good in white, timer works nicely and I do like the concept of the ratio conversion. Shown in photos with 0 measurement drift over time, even without the silicone mat. To make this the best scale in the price range, I would change: - The auto timer function. Timing currently stops if you pick up the brew to swirl; you must completely restart the process if you do happen to pick it up. I would change that to only stop on user input (pressing a button). - The ratio conversion. Why offer XX.0 precision if you can only change the ratio in whole amounts? I'd suggest offering 0.1 increments, selectable with +/- buttons instead of cycling through. - The silicone mat is not well affixed and slides around. Kind of useless as-is and I just keep it off. I would wrap the whole thing around the measurement platform, similar to how the Greater Goods scale does it, to really keep it secure. It's not perfect, but for the price, it's a 4.5/5 for me. Rounding up to 5 since a 4 is considered "bad" by today's online rating standards.

IMO, a filter coffee lovers best scale option on a budget. Solid grade A choice.
Color: Black
I have two other .1mg "coffee" or food scales that I used regular for pour overs. I saw this has 4x display on real time flow rate, g/mg weight, timer, and grounds to water ratio for a solid price and purchased this after reading some reviews. One of my scales has these features, but the workflow on this scale just clicked a ton better for me. The beep isn't super loud annoying which is a major relief, as I just couldn't keep sound on on my other scale due to that trigger honestly. I tried brew mode immediately and will now only use that when making a pour over. Loved the beep alerting when I finally hit the proper ratio and I like it keeps my final info on screen after the brew for my study. I can actually practice my technique now and not have split attention as much. This is still compact, but fits a larger carafe well whereas my other scale is a better fit for the espresso machine. The display is clear and buttons have a slight tactile sensation from the print, but are still the capacitive touch based style. I tested it with weights and it is my most accurate scale, it hit the .1g accurately every time or at worst would fluctuate back and forth quickly from the true value (more than enough for me to trust it). It updates and tares from power on fairly fast, it reacts fast enough to touch to not make me pause much. My nitpicks are that the front clear matte plastic isn't quite uniform flat viewed at an off angle giving it a cheaper look, but that doesn't affect functionality at all and truth is, it really was very affordable for the feature set I feel. The second nitpick was that the scale's mat does not grip well or fit securely over prompting it to move around easily. For this I had to modify using some rubberized grip tape on the surface of scale underneath the mat itself. Now it doesn't slide from vibration and if any pressure down it doesn't slip. I could have removed it totally, but it is attractive and useful once stabilized. With that modification done, I can fully recommend this scale for filter coffee lovers at any price. Great product, hopefully lasts me a long time.
